• Hector and the Search for Happiness

Soon into Hector and the Search for Happiness, the baffling new leading man vehicle for Simon Pegg from director Peter Chelsom (The Hannah Montana Movie), I realised why the ‘dramedic’ inertia felt so familiar. Hector has much in common with last year’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a Ben Stiller film which was remarkable for recreating perfectly in cinematic form the polished emptiness of a high-end credit card commercial. Both are adaptations of a literary work (here, a popular 2002 novel by Francois Lelord), both use a well-known comic actor for a slightly straighter role, and both are about…

  • Video premiere: The North Sea – In Love

The first track to be taken from their as-of-yet unnamed debut album, Dublin alt-rock five-piece The North Sea will release ‘In Love’ on September 26 – and we’ve the first look of the single’s video. Shot by Second Frame and directed by Niall Conroy and Daniel Kennedy, it’s a nicely-lit, monochrome affair, perfectly capture the song’s slick, darkly tangents, reminiscent of the likes of Interpol and Editors. The follow-up to their promising, 2012 self-titled EP, the band’s forthcoming album was recorded live to tape in order to capture their live sound, and was produced by Grammy Award-winning Irish producer David Odlum…

  • A Brief History of Post-Rock

Of the countless genre names that describe modern music, post-rock is probably the vaguest of those widely used. Open to generalisation, uncertainty and blind exaggeration, it has no commonly accepted definition and many acts including Tortoise and Mogwai have distanced themselves from the term. That said, much like postmodernism or the avant-garde, there remains a general consensus about the development and essential traits central to this most ambiguous of labels, currently used to describe the likes of This Will Destroy You, Mono and our very own Adebisi Shank, And So I Watch You From Afar, etc. Brian Coney attempts to trace…

  • Robin Williams Tribute & Suicide Awareness Fundraiser @ The Pavilion

Out of nowhere, we’ve lost one of the finest comedians of our generation. Gone at a sickeningly young age, Robin Williams has moved plains – instantly elsewhere, tragic, unfortunate but “what would he have wanted?” A party/gathering of aficionados raising funds for charity, that’s what. The night – which takes place at the Pavilion Bar on Friday, September 5 – will feature film, music, stand-up and everything in between. Let’s raise awareness/money for suicide awareness charities, and revel in the sheer comedic majesty of Robin McLaurin Williams, one of the greatest people to have ever existed.Entrance will be free but donations are welcome. Doors…

  • Boxcutter – Shea EP

London-based, Northern Irish producer Barry Lynn AKA Boxcutter, is back with a small helping of delightful, electronic treats with his latest release, the Shea EP. The self-titled opening track lures the listener right in with a catchy, looping female vocal sample and its incredible array of dynamics. With earphones in and volume up, you feel the full force of Lynn’s creation, and the specific points of detail within these tracks are nothing short of impressive. ‘Holoscene’ allows Shea to stand on its own merits. With an ambience of what seem to be the sound of crickets, it’s easy to find oneself getting lost…
