Rave New World (20/3)

blawan

With Antoin Lindsay temporarily AWOL (he’s moving country, ok? Enough with those crazy thoughts about being on the run from loan sharks, etc.) Aidan Hanratty delivers this week’s Rave New World on his most capable lonesome. Electronic music is a thing, and a very good thing. Embrace it like a long-lost brother, you cold, inconsiderate swine. Only joking – you’re lovely.

Mud: Bodytonic present Blawan & Sunil Sharpe at The Twisted Pepper
Friday, March 20

Last year Sunil Sharpe went b2b with Ben UFO. Rather than Ben going harder, Sunil went deeper, showing the breadth of this local hero’s ability. Alongside Blawan (pictured), however, expect carnage. “A post-Paddy’s Day ‘wind down’ it might not be, but it’ll be something anyway,” says the man himself.

John Talabot, Marc Piñol & Dani Baughman – Hivern Discs Showcase at District 8
Saturday, March 21

This one might be a bit more languid, if no less exuberant. John Talabot’s long-running Hivern Discs is in town, with JT’s fellow bossman Dani Baughman and C.P.I.’s Marc Piñol on support. Talabot’s been a keen purveyor of slick, emotive house music since long before his graceful ƒIN came out on Young Turks, and his DJ sets

Another Side – Interstellar Funk, NL at The Twisted Pepper
Wednesday, March 25

This should be interesting. Midweek madness in the Twisted Pepper, with Cork man Shane Linehan supporting Rush Hour’s Interstellar Funk. I believe it’s his first time here so give him a good ould welcome. There’s an all-vinyl night going on too, so there’s plenty to enjoy.

TRACKS

NPLGNN – 1925 Ft Deep

Last year NPLGNN put out a record on Where To Now?, and now he’s back with the opening release on new lavel OKNO, the brainchild of Laetitia Deering and Abi Thompson, of Phonica/Annex fame. This track featured on the wonderful Radio Debonair show on NTS this week. It’s up-tempo, high-energy rave fodder, distorted and maniacal. A beaut, in short.

Ivy Barkakati – mango sheen

Maryland born and Barcelona based, Ivy Barkakati is relentlessly productive, regularly offering up new tracks and mixes on a variety of labels and platforms (including this writer’s own Bandcloud compilation last year). While most often embdedded in a darkened world of drone-heavy techno, mango sheen sees her flex her synth muscles, its gorgeous colour cascading like a summery mist. Set to feature on an unnamed compilation this year, it’s a delightful piece of work.

Lumigraph – Not That It Matters

New Lumigraph alert! It’s been a minute since we’ve had any solo work from this guy (I think it was last on the WHEREIIDANCE comp?) so this is a welcome treat. Squelchy bleeps and squeaks over rugged beats and classic strings.

RELEASES + MIXES

система # 30 | YOUNG MALE
Ukraine-based система (system) have tapped White Material’s Young Male for their latest mix. It’s a deep, deep vibe, taking in the trance-like rhythms of Abdulla Rashim and Sandwell District, peppering it with the industrial heft of Throbbing Gristle, and closing it with his own take on ‘Muzak’.

videogamemusic – Gardens Volume Two

Gardens Vol One appeared late last year, an album of remixes built around a single track produced by Broshuda and Giganta. Here is a second volume of same, 12 tracks inspired by that original number (hints and flecks of that track appear throughout) with suitably outdoorsy titles.
