Rave New World w/ Timmy Stewart Mix

525b88b2a683fb1d-TimmyStewartBoilerRoom

In what’s probably long overdue, we’re proud to introduce the Rave New World mix series. We’ll be hosting mixes from some of our favourite DJs and artists from the island of Ireland.

First up we have a legend around Belfast, Timmy Stewart. Timmy’s been DJing around Belfast for ages and his knowledge of house, techno, disco, the lot, is unmatched in the city. He’s been the in-house booker for Shine and Stiff Kitten as well as taking up monthly residencies in Yello, Love & Death, Aether & Echo and The Hudson as well as co-running the Extended Play imprint. To coincide with the recent launch of his weekly night The Night Institute at Aether & Echo alongside Jordan, Timmy’s provided us with a belter of a mix which is the perfect warm up for both the weekend and what else is to come in the series. Enjoy an education from a local master.

GIGS

Belfast Music Club All Dayer with Ruf Dug at The Hudson Bar, Belfast
Saturday, September 5

Manchester’s finest Ruf Dug will be bringing vibes all day on Saturday alongside a host of other DJs at the Hudson. A total gem of a DJ, hopefully the rain will stay away so he can take full advantage of the Yard. It’s free in too so no excuse to pop in, even for a while. AL

Shine Present: Dave Clarke, Darren Emerson, Funk D’Void and Medicine8 at QUBSU, Belfast
Saturday, September 5

In advance of their full-blown 20th birthday celebrations, Shine are bringing a host of their classic names in one night this Saturday. Headlined by techno demigod Dave Clarke, he’ll be joined across the three rooms in the Union by Darren Emerson, Funk D’Void, Medicine8 and a host of locals. As with any Shine, it’s probably a good idea to get down early or pick up a ticket beforehand. AL

Techno & Cans presents: Bjarki [Live] at Hangar
Friday, September 4

Everyone might claim to be at Electric Picnic but Nina Kraviz’s man Bjarki will be tearing things up at Hangar. He dropped this heavy track on Nina’s Trip label a little while back, so this is what you can expect to hear tonight, and more. AH

Rise Up! X Bastardo Electrico Pres. Pangaea at The Pav
Friday, September 4

Pangaea might be the quietest of the Hessle trio, but in many ways he goes hardest, if his recent releases for his Hadal label, and his entry to the FABRICLIVE series are anything to go by. While the Pav “felt like being at a school disco in its older iteration” according to a friend, its upgraded soundsystem is worth a look if Mr McAuley isn’t enough of a draw for you. AH

TRACKS

Golden Teacher – Shatter [Optimo]

Tad slow on the uptake with this one, but I couldn’t help but put this monster in. Golden Teacher have been floating about Glasgow for a while but their pretty much undefinable sound has been building up a fanbase all over the place. These news tracks seems to be getting play from the likes of Ben UFO and Midland so except that to trickle down as lots more people catch on to their delightful weirdness. AL

DJ Richard – Savage Coast [Dial]

The genuinely outstanding DJ Richard album is looming and ‘Savage Coast’ is a highlight of the record. It’s very much in the vein of Kassem Mosse and the like but with that ‘comfort in the cold’ deep house vibe that runs through much of the Dial back catalogue. Gorgeous. AL

Levantis – Jamaican Greek Style

This is one for late nights, dark mornings, sombre moods. It’s a 10-minute piece that speaks to the most wretched of thoughts. Levantis, who’s previously released on Trilogy Tapes, is set to drop this full-length, “about Nigredo and possession of the shadow”, on Technicolour on October 30. Seasonal. Nigredo means putrefaction or decomposition. Fitting. Play this as your soul seeps down to Carcosa. AH

Sassy J – Resident Advisor 483

A beautifully cerebral mix from Bern-based DJ Sassy J. She knocked out a stormer of a guest mix on the Hessle Audio show a few months back so Resident Advisor have made a very wise decision in having her in to do a full hour long mix. It’s full of proper deep cuts, to the point where I can only recognise one Huerco S. track at the start of the mix. The rest is full of deep, spacious delight. AL

Sage Caswell – Sleep Quarters (Spring Theory)

LA producer Sage Caswell just dropped a four-track release for Spring Theory, and it’s a study in duality. Two perfectly serviceable house tracks kick things off, with muffled kicks and droningly repetitive piano lending a gently narcotic flavour to ‘Sleep Quarters’. ‘Paper USB’ is more unctuous, with rolling keys driving forward throughout. On a wholly different tip, the latter two tracks are two gorgeous slices of ambient wonder, ‘Shiny Dog’ has a slight pulse but never quite steps beyond the its dainty fragrance. ‘For Runner’ is the real standout for me though, almost 10 minutes in length and glorious from start to finish. Soft yet powerful, its simple chords are relaxed yet fraught with the tension of a slightly raised eyebrow. One to repeat for the ages. AH

Helena Hauff – Discreet Desires (Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune)

Super album from dark techno wizard Helena Hauff. Shades of label boss Actress and Arpanet pervade, as nightmarish visages give way to irresistible full-body workouts. AH

OEJ Mixtape XXIII – Sonja (Labareda)

Lisbon DJ Sonja turns in a masterful workout for her compatriots in the One-Eyed Jacks crew. It’s slow and low, dark rumblings of chunky techno noise. Get dirty. AH
