Rave New World (20/05)

finn the thin air rave new worldAidan Hanratty looks at the week’s best gigs, tracks, mixes and releases.

Gigs

Shivers with Leon Vynehall (3 hr set) at Electric Garden & Theatre, Galway
Friday 20 May

Fresh from the release of his album Rojus on Running Back, joyous house guru Leon Vynehall comes to Galway for a lengthy set at Shivers. These guys are getting some seriously good bookings, so we’re glad to see this party taking off.

AVA/TNI/BMC Pres Dekmantel Soundsystem at Aether & Echo, Belfast
Saturday 21 May

AVA is just around the corner, and The Night Institute and Belfast Music Club are coming together to host the Dekmantel Soundsystem for the night. Dekmantel are a quality night/label/festival so you can expect a solid night of proper good house and techno.

Tracks

Sias – Milk Harbour [Jheri Tracks]

Jheri Tracks is a young label that’s grown out of All City Records, and with their third release they’ve tapped up Sias, aka Frank Sweeney. After releases and tracks for the likes of Farbwechsel and Where To Now?, this is his first record in some time. The title track is a slightly manic number that kicks hard for its seven minutes, an off-kilter mid more sane than the screeching synths above. It’s big.

SoulParlor – Pure (K15 Remix)

I don’t think we share house music like this often enough, but we should. This remix from London’s K15 is on a seriously jazzy tip, with improv keys floating for days, and it’s shimmering with glorious sunlight. Beats broken like the first digestive, it’s warm and enriching.

Mixes/releases

BIS Radio Show #834 with Kim Ann Foxman

BiS is always good, but this one is a gem. Kim Ann Foxman offers up a lovely set that’s classic New York house in the best way possible.

Finn – Finn Theme II / Full Stop

Bossman Finn comes correct once again, dropping his latest release (digi only) with little build-up or fanfare. Riotous floor-filling action, as you’d expect, with ‘Full Stop’ returning to the cut-up action that he nails every time.

Truant: Melmoth – Rule Of Thirds

Not sure how ethical this is, but sure whatever. In my other writing life I’m a Truant, and fellow Truant Riccardo has just recorded a mix under his Melmoth guise. It’s absolutely belting, a joyous tread through bangers new and old. It’s got ‘Touch Me’, say no more.

Allergy Season – Allergy Edits, Vol. 1

Last year Physical Therapy gathered a bunch of friends and put the free Side Effects May Include compilation on his Allergy Season Bandcamp page. This year he’s got a new one, Allergy Edits, Vol. 1, in which acts like Galcher Lustwerk, Umfang and Terekke take classic jams and revise them in their own style. You’ll know the hooks, the licks, the riffs, but you’ve never heard them like this.
