• 19 For ‘19: Lighght

We continue 19 for ’19 – our month-long series profiling nineteen Irish acts that we’re certain will do great things in 2019 – with Cork producer Lightght. Photo by Silvio Severino. We first became aware of Cork experimental producer Lighght back in 2016 when he shared the bracing and multi-dimensional single, ‘What U Need’. Since, we’ve been keeping a close eye on his prolific output, which has included numerous collaborations, solo cuts and remixes of acts ranging from Jamelia to Lankum. 2018 saw the producer feature on Sesh FM’s charity compilation for Palestine as well releasing two EPs: the hectic trance inflected…

  • 19 for ‘19: Natalia Beylis

19 for ’19 rolls on, featuring nineteen Irish acts we’re convinced are going places in 2019. Throughout January we’ll be previewing each of those acts, accompanied by words from our writers and an original photograph from one of our photographers. Third in our series marks a leftfield turn in the form of one of Ireland’s most evocative sonic artists, Natalia Beylis. Photo by Sean McCormack ___ As a member of Leitrim experimental/psych outfit Woven Skull, Natalia Beylis’ mandola offers an earthiness and melodic weight to the clamorous percussion and howling guitars that surround it. The band – who featured two years ago in our 17…

  • Marcus Woods shares fast-paced electronic cut, ‘Saturn V’

We first became aware Marcus Woods back in 2017 around the release of his polychrome via the ever elusive Wooden Spoons imprint. The now tape exclusive EP of self-proclaimed ‘Chill Trash’ was a fine introduction to the Dublin producer whose atmospheric, lo-fi beats have seen him evolving to be one of the country’s most sought after young producers. Last October, he released his debut digital album, demo, which you can check out here. Now, the 18-year-old beatmaker is embarking on his 2019 release schedule, launching proceedings with the fast-paced and percussive electronics of ‘Saturn V’. Shared via his own Burner Records, the track is named after…

  • New Pope shares surprise EP, Mångata

TTA favourite and Galway institution, New Pope AKA David Boland has dropped a spontaneous EP to mark the new year. Titled Mångata, the seven-track release is, for now, a YouTube exclusive and is the first new music to come from the Citóg Records founder in over a year. Since we last spoke to Boland around the release of his 2016 debut LP Love, he’s shared a reworked edition of tracks from his former band The Depravations and continued to be a regular live fixture in Galway’s venues. Strangely though, 2018 also saw him removing all of his previous releases from Bandcamp, including Love and its preceding EP, Youth.  With the…

  • Album Stream: Trick Mist – Both Ends

We’ve been big fans of Trick Mist here at TTA for quite some time. We first became aware of him back when he lived in Manchester, after he released the lush, dark single ‘Crumbs Abound’. Since, he has travelled across India and South-East Asia, before ending up back to Ireland and relocating to Cork to write his debut LP Both Ends.  Released today (30th November) via Dundalk’s Pizza Pizza Records, this LP serves as the culmination of two years’ work, incorporating his trademark violin manipulations with electronic and organic soundscapes. In October, he released the video for album track ‘Abroad In The…

  • Album Stream + Interview: Woven Skull

Photo: Colum O’Dwyer Back at the end of 2016, we included Leitrim experimental/psych outfit Woven Skull in our 17 for ’17 round up of acts to watch in the coming year. We like to think we were fairly on the money with the trio, who both on an individual level and as an outfit delivered dividends throughout 2017 and well into this year… Mondola player Natalia Beylis, for one, developed her breathtaking field recordings and drones project with the release of The Sunken Hum Vol 1: Field Rhythms & Drones and Scchh...phh. Guitarist Aonghus McEvoy, meanwhile, continued his solo and…

  • Mothers – Render Another Ugly Method

“Hard to focus and efforts fruitless…” So sings Mothers’ frontwoman and creative nucleus Kristine Leschper on the jagged ‘MUTUAL AGREEMENT’, crystallising the looming themes of dread and futility that permeate the band’s woozy second album. Sadly, the quote also serves as a succinct review of this imperfect and ultimately exhausting release. Downcast opener, ‘BEAUTY ROUTINE’ comes tentatively into focus with shivering fronds of detuned guitar and the first of many keening but gloomy vocal performances. The track drifts idly along as if bobbing underwater, seemingly reliant on tidal micro currents to sluggishly propel itself to the end of each verse. Leschper…

  • Premiere: Lighght shares track as part of Humans of the Sesh charity compilation for Palestine

Everyone’s favourite bag of cans themed meme platform Humans of the Sesh launched their music strand Sesh FM little over a year ago. Since, it’s been providing great means for emerging Irish electronic artists to showcase tracks, EPs and mixes from the likes of Gadget and the Cloud, Doubt, Syn and Cnámha.  Now, the channel has launched its ‘Solidarity’ charity compilation series. ‘Solidarity Volume 1’ drops this Saturday 4th August, with all proceeds set to be donated to pro-Palestine charities. The compilation features a whopping 20 tracks from a wide array of Irish electronic producers including those artists lifted above and many more…

  • Stream: Psank – Ataxia

We’re big fans of Feather Beds here at TTA. Now, the project’s Michael Orange has started something completely different in the form of Psank. Teaming up with Adam Browne AKA Plaice, the Dublin based duo delve further into the electronic landscape than either of them have before in this new project. Have played together previously in Autumn Owls, the pair are well used to working together and it shows in their debut EP Fabric which finds them branching into explorative ambience and melancholic dancefloor territory. While Orange has ventured into this kind of territory before with his superb Feather Beds releases, with Psank he and Browne explore even…

  • Naive Ted drops fierce new Magazines mixtape: Stream

Naive Ted is nothing if not one of Ireland’s most prolific and criminally underrated artists. Last year, for example, we were blown away by the Limerick-based scratch master and frenetic, experimental hip hop producer’s MuRli featuring The Minute Particulars // Episode I – The death of my trust is sincerely yours album and its subsequent instalments. Now, the masked producer has returned with yet another mixtape. This time, available for free via Soundcloud. It’s, as expected, absolutely buck wild. Wielding a sort of hectic poeticism throughout, Ted’s frenetic beats, sampling and machine bashing make for a chaotic but constantly exhilarating listen. You can also download the release…
