The other night as I was walking through Galway on the way to see Dan Deacon and Meltybrains? as part of this year’s International Arts Festival I passed a busker playing acoustic folk tunes to a fairly sizeable crowd. He sounded pretty alright, one of the many street performers that liven up the town’s streets at this time of year, putting smiles (or just triggering quick glances) on the faces of passers by, tourist or local. It’s not the norm for a three-day music festival here to have perfect weather from start to finish. It just isn’t. Yet somehow it’s clear to all that the sun gods are well and truly shining down on the side of Longitude’s promoters and its thousands of sun cream covered attendees this weekend. Upon entering the main arena there is a noticeable throwback to the early days of Oxegen where the bars and countless food stalls attempt to keep everyone penned in due to its arching layout. Tuesday July 12th saw the third in this year’s Event Talk series take place in Wood Quay. Hosted by Banter and Eventbrite, the series focuses on event-related talks and conversations, including festival trends and the science of events. For the third talk the topic was that of Dublin needing a Night Mayor, a topic of debate at SXSW and something many other European cities have brought in.
