  • Video Premiere: Queen Bonobo @ The Live Room Belfast

The Live Room is one of Belfast’s most valuable musical resources – an eclectic, Live At KEXP-esque showcase of the finest artists to pass through Belfast, based in the city’s most welcoming and well-equipped studio, Start Together. They’ve run the gamut from the crushing doom of Slomatics and Conan to the Word Up Collective‘s hotly-tipped R&B voices of Super Silly & Jordan Adetunji. Back after a brief quiet spell, the latest in their series is title track ‘Boom Boom’, taken from the debut album by Derry-based, Idaho-born chanteuse Queen Bonobo, taken from a session recorded during Belfast’s Output Convention in February. We’ve said it before, but Maya’s vocal has the uncanny ability to take the quality of a sine wave, and…

  • Premiere: Queen Bonobo – The Lord Does What He Wants

Currently studying music and living in Derry, Maya Goldblum aka Queen Bonobo is a singer-songwriter hailing from the tightly-knit community of Sagle, Idaho. On May 10, Goldblum will launch her debut album, Light Shadow Boom Boom, at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin in Derry. Ahead of that, we’re pleased to present a first listen of its latest single, ‘The Lord Does What He Wants’. Engineered by Niall Doran, mixed by Ben McAuley and mastered by Stephen Quinn, it’s an unraveling alt-folk gem also featuring Daryl Coyle on co-production and drums, Jack Kelly on double bass and James Anderson on percussion. “I started writing ‘The Lord Does…

  • Premiere: Maya Goldblum – Light Me Up

Content Note: Depression & suicide One of the growing number of Derry-based acts currently blurring genre lines and eschewing conventions, Idaho-born singer & guitarist Maya Goldblum – or Queen Bonobo in a full band setting – is set to release her debut album, Light Shadow Boom Boom, in May. Ahead of that, we’re premiering lead single ‘Light Me Up’, a buoyant slice of soulful jazz whose winsome face belies a diaristic portrayal of depression, as Goldblum brings gravitas and candour to a style of music currently underrepresented – at least in an artistic sense – in Northern Ireland. Maya had a chat with us about its subject matter: “Light Me Up stemmed from feeling constrained in…
