  • Exhibition: Portraits: Women of Cork and the U.S. Navy 1917-1919 @ Sirius Arts Centre

    Today and tomorrow are the last to see a fascinating new body of work by Damian Shiels in Cobh’s Sirius Arts Centre. Titled Portraits: Women of Cork and the U.S. Navy 1917-1919, the exhibition looks at the social outcomes of America’s entry into the First World War. Their participation in the war saw thousands of US soldiers emerge into the communities around Cork. This influx of soldiers, and their subsequent socialising in the city, saw many Cork natives become ‘war brides’. While these relationships were generally greeted with celebration in America, on this side of the Atlantic hostilities arose, which then turned to violence. Ultimately the US Navy banned…

  • Exhibition: Parc du Souvenir @ Sirius

    © Stephen Brandes – Parc du Souvenir Stephen Brandes’ Parc du Souvenir is due to end its run in Cobh’s Sirius Arts Centre later this week. The British born artist has lived in Cork since the early 1990’s. In Parc du Souvenir Brandes uses a number of materials, including lino to create the large format print shown above.   • Artist Talk: Cliona Harmey @ Sirius

    This Friday sees artist Cliona Harmey in Cobh’s Sirius Arts Centre for a discussion around her practice. Harmey made a series of visits to Cobh and Sirius Arts Centre in both 2015 and 2016 as she continues to work on new projects. This new work will be discussed alongside a pair of short films made last year at Hawlbowline Naval base with members of the Irish Defence forces. Harmey’s practice has often taken on naval themes which was most notably executed in 2015’s wonderful Dublin Ships installation – see photo above.
