    Having declared back in January that they were “alive and well and making plans for 2016” Dublin’s self-proclaimed Bockety POP collective Popical Island will host their grand twenty-second Popicalia at Bello Bar on Saturday, July 30. Headlined by indie-rock trio Squarehead, the show – which also features fellow islanders Land Lovers and Ginnels – is an inestimable opportunity to (re-)acquaint oneself with said bocket.   • Gem Fest 2016

    Purveyors of all things sonically excellent, Dublin’s Little Gem Records will host a free concert and celebration at The Bandstand in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on Sunday, July 17. An all-ages, free event, where picnic blankets and dancing shoes are encouraging, Patrick Kelleher, Roslyn Steer, Fuzzy Hell and Cobra Truth will all perform from 2pm. Nice.

  • Remembering John Coltrane @ Black Box, Belfast

    The latest outing from the ever-tasteful folks at Solid Choice Industries, Belfast’s Black Box will host a free celebration of the music of John Coltrane on Sunday, July 17. Marking the 49th anniversary of the legendary jazz saxophonist and composer’s passing, the night will explore the wide arc of Coltrane’s own work and the music of his contemporaries that he inspired. Including a screening of The World According to John Coltrane (a 1990 documentary produced in association with his esteemed widow, Alice) this is an unmissable proposition for diehard fans, the well-acquainted and newcomers alike.     The latest in a series “promoting German musicianship and artistry” in Ireland, HomeBeat and the Goethe-Institut Irland will host the next Zehr Gut at Dublin’s Temple Bar Gallery and Studios on Friday, July 8. Making up the bill for this installment is Dublin-based Australian songstress Liza Flume, electro-pop threesome Sleep Thieves and Leipzig’s Sevensol, founder of the city’s imprint Kann.   • Psykick Dancehall #3: Kojaque, God Creative + Crimes Against and Young Phantom @ Bello Bar, Dublin

    Featuring some of the absolute best in the emerging Irish Hip-Hop scene, the latest installment of Psykick Dancehall – our regular Dublin showcase with Medium Presents – takes place at Bello Bar on Saturday, June 25.   • Innocence of Memories with Grant Gee @ Irish Film Institute

    Perhaps best known as director of 1998 Radiohead documentary, Meeting People is Easy – as well as the video for ‘No Surprises’ – British film maker, photographer and cinematographer Grant Gee will make an appearance at Dublin’s Irish Film Institute on Sunday, May 29. A highlight of this year’s International Literature Festival, there will be a screening of Gee’s latest film, Innocence of Memories, followed by a Q+A with Grant in conversation with writer and critic Peter Murphy.
