People On Sunday Live Score: Rachel Grimes, Matthew Nolan & Mary Barnecutt

    Triskel Arts Centre

1930 silent film People On Sunday is set to receive a live musical accompaniment in Cork's Triskel Arts Centre on September 28. Performing will be Dublin musician & academic Matthew Nolan on guitar & electronics, Rachel Grimes - of cult US avant-garde act Rachel's - on piano & electronics, and cellist Mary Barnecutt - known for her work in free jazz and with Dublin City Chamber Orchestra - who will bring a new original score to this cinematic paean to the last days of Weimar Germany.

Filmed on location in Berlin, using a cast of amateurs in roles based on their actual day jobs, the film sustains a lyrical tranquility as people swim, listen to music, flirt, and generally enjoy their time away from the daily grind. People on Sunday  was an unassuming but groundbreaking response to the big-budget films being produced by UFA at the time, and boasted a crew of young German cineastes who would later become major filmmakers in Hollywood: Robert Siodmak, Edgar G. Ulmer, Fred Zinnemann and Billy Wilder.

Tickets cost €18 from the Triskel Arts Centre. The event kicks off at 8pm.
