Saturday September 21st would have been Mic Christopher’s 50th birthday. In his honour, friends, fans and admirers will stage a concert for him in his spiritual home of Whelan’s. A vast array of talent will gather to sing some of Mic’s best-known songs together, ranging from close friends to people he never met. Michael was an American-born Irish singer-songwriter, best known for debut album Skylarkin', which was released posthumously.
He originally met many major Irish names on the busking circuit, including Glen Hansard & Kila's Karl & David Odlum, forming The Mary Janes with Karl. They released two albums, and Mic went on to perform solo, supporting the Waterboys on an international tour. He passed away as a result of an accidental head trauma, and the notes he'd left for Skylarkin' informed the post-humous completion of his solo album, which won the 2003 Meteor Award for Best Album.
The lineup includes:
Acko, Ailbhe Reddy, Alice Jago, Ann Scott, Aoife Carton, Clare Sands, Cry Monster Cry, Davy Lyons, Eve Darcy, Inni-K, Jane Willow, Karl Odlum, Leslie Keye, Lisa Hannigan, Margaret Healy, Mark Dignam, Mark Geary, Muireann, Nina Hynes, Paddy Casey, Sharon Horgan, Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Q, Rónán Ó Snodaigh, Saoirse Casey, The Daydreamers, The Pale, Ultan Conlon.
Tickets cost €29 from WAV Tickets, and all money will go towards Aidlink's local partner charities in Kenya & Uganda. The core focus of the work Aidlink funds is based on capacity building within society by empowering women, which begins with education, but also includes irrigation and sanitation. The welfare of children was a huge concern of Mic’s, so it’s fitting that the funds will be used in this way. The show runs from 8pm-11pm.
