• Caoilian Sherlock – Teenage Jesus

In between pulling double duty with The Shaker Hymn and The Tan Jackets, Caoilian Sherlock has been threatening to release a solo album for years. First testing the waters under the moniker St. Caoilian over 5 years ago, his first full-length album Teenage Jesus is more than worth the wait. Album opener ‘The Wheels Come Off’ is a dreamy, sentimental exposition to a record that drifts between its psychedelic, folk, pop, and country influences, showcasing a singer-songwriter who is at ease with his own creative process. Stand-out tracks include ‘Candidate’, a snappy and self-deprecating rock ‘n’ roll homage with more…

  • Video Premiere: Caoilian Sherlock – Candidate

It’s mind-melting to think it’s been nine whole years since we featured Caoilian Sherlock as part of our Track Record feature. As well as pushing forward as frontman of indie-psych foursome The Shaker Hymn, the Cork musician has also carved out a distinctive path under his own name. On singles like ‘Sucker For Love,’ and last year’s four-track EP Big Child, Sherlock’s alternative folk pop has burrowed deep, authentic and earworming. Just last month, Sherlock returned with arguably his finest single to date ‘Candidate’. Produced and mixed by Brendan Fennessy, and featuring Shane Murphy on drums (with additional drums by…

  • The Thin Air’s Top 100 Tracks of 2019 (#100-76)

Ahead of our annual Top 50 Irish Releases of the Year (that is to say EPs, compilations, reissues & albums) list later this week, we’re counting down our Top 100 Irish Tracks of 2019 daily. While we always say it, we had a hard time cutting down the list – however, we hope this list will highlight the ongoing mission to promote island-wide solidarity between musicians and listeners alike, turning you on to something you otherwise might never have listened to, whether that be hip-hop loaded with kitchen sink realism, fist-clenched DIY LK indie rock, boundary-crushing experimental composition, or any flavour in between. And rather than giving the game away too soon, we’ve opted for the age-old descending option, starting with 100-76. Dig…

  • Track Record: Caoilian Sherlock (The Shaker Hymn)

In the latest installment of Track Record – a feature looking at the record collections of Irish musicians and artists – photographer Brid O’Donovan shoots Caoilian Sherlock, lead singer and guitarist for Cork alt-rock four-piece The Shaker Hymn choosing and selecting some of his all-time favourite records, everything from legendary West Coast rappers and local psych-rock masters. The Clash – London Calling This is the only Clash album I actually like. When myself and my friend Oran were fifteen we went to Kerry for a holiday and we had two albums. Oran was the first person I met that knew about records…
