• Fecking Bahamas – V. Ireland

To say Ireland has an unusually rich track record in the realms of math-rock, post-rock and instrumental music would be something of an understatement. This is something Melbourne music website Fecking Bahamas (assumingly named after the latter-day Don Caballero song ‘Palms Trees In the Fecking Bahamas’) have copped onto, manifesting in V. Ireland, a new, 21 track compilation featuring tracks from the likes of And So I Watch You From Afar, The Redneck Manifesto and Abebisi Shank to lesser-known but no less sorcerous sonic conquistadors in We Are Knives, Val Normal and Psychojet. Their fifth-region specific compilation and their first release…

  • Watch: Easy Tide – Denim on Denim

Navan trio Easy Tide have unveiled the video for their new single ‘Denim on Denim’. Formed in 2010, the band blend elements of garage rock, shoegaze and post-punk to create a sound that veers from the raw and energised to the altogether more fragile. ‘Denim on Denim’ sits modestly in the latter category. Their first release of 2017, the track follows from the release of their debut LP Ennui from February 2016 and singles ‘Tea Party’ and ‘Mind Your Head’. A hoarse serving of fuzzed up melodies and a honest lyricism, ‘Denim on Denim’ will satisfy fans of Yo La Tengo and Built To Spill. In…

  • Stream: Joshua Burnside – Tunnels Pt. 2

Long one of our favourite Irish singer-songwriters, Joshua Burnside has been experiencing a real lease of life over the last few months. Having recorded his long-awaited debut album, Ephrata, with the likes of Smalltown America in Derry, Lisburn’s Millbank Studios and producer Phil D’Alton last year, the Belfast-based musician will set it loose via Quiet Arch on May 5. The first single to be taken from the release, ‘Tunnels  Pt. 2’ sees Burnside effortlessly adopt a slicker, more fleshed-out alternative folk aesthetic than material of yore, delivering a propulsive and impassioned ode that puts his tale-telling centre-stage once more. Make sure to…

  • Stream: Group Zero – The Pummelling Repetition Inside

Beyond the more post-punk and art-rock leaning world of his main project, Girls Names‘ frontman Cathal Cully has always had a strong interest in esoteric electronic sounds. Having recently finished up recording Girls Names’ forthcoming fourth studio album, Cully has announced news of his debut solo album as Group Zero, Structures and Light, a release written, recorded and mixed intermittently over the space of four years. Set for release via Belfast’s Touch Sensitive records on Friday, February 24, Cully said of the release: “It was as an exercise in my own development and it was fun. It brought the naivety and spontaneity back…

  • Stream: New Jackson – Electric Blue

Including a fair few Irish artists, 2016 expectedly saw a deluge of Bowie tributes in the form of various covers, remixes and collaborations. Now, just over a year on from Bowie’s passing, David Kitt has offered up his own tribute in the form of ‘Electric Blue’. Produced under his New Jackson moniker and set for release in collaboration with Elliot Lion via Cin Cin Records on February 10, the single takes the basis of ‘Sound of Vision’ for a stellar, unravelling 10-minute dancefloor trip that really rewards a full (and indeed repeated) listen. • Stream: Eoin Dolan – I Can Make You Hurt at Will

An unused track from his 2016 self-titled debut album, ‘I Can Make You Hurt at Will’ by Galway singer-songwriter Eoin Dolan is a subtle, masterfully sombre surf-folk single touching on nocturnalism, the long winter and the hidden laws of love. Released in association with Citóg Records, the track – featuring Patrick O’Toole on lead guitar and Robin Van Der Klooster on bass – is short but sweet testament to the fact Dolan is a master craftsman of tales that confront the innate fragility of relationships and personal becoming. • Stream: Jealous of the Birds and Ryan Vail – ‘Love is a Crow’

Having received airplay on Lauren Laverne’s BBC 6Music show yesterday, ‘Love is a Crow’ is a one-off collaboration from Derry’s Ryan Vail and Portadown’s Naomi Hamilton AKA Jealous of the Birds. Melding a trickle of sublime spoken word from the latter and a bobbing flurry of beats and spectral synth-work from the former, the single is accompanied by remixes from The Cyclist and Belfast’s Dee Lucille AKA DIE HEXEN. • Premiere: Guilty Optics – And So It Goes

In the sixth issue of our physical magazine, Joe Madsen said Dublin trio Guilty Optics “proudly steer clear of poppy trends”, an observation that came to full-blown fruition in July last year via ‘The Kayapo Ghosts’, the virulent lead single from their forthcoming album Colossal Velocity.  The equally commanding successor to that opening gambit, ‘And So It Goes’ is a five-minute post-punk burst “confronting the role government plays in our lives, it’s desire for control and its previous attempt to abolish the senate.” Dig below.

  • Premiere: Deadman’s Ghost – Antidote

Shot at various scenic locations in Northern Ireland including the Belfast hills, Lough Shannagh in the Mournes and Gobbins Path, the video for ‘Antidote’ by Belfast musician, producer and DJ Jason Mills AKA Deadman’s Ghost is a fitting accompaniment to a song that grasps forth in attempt to move on from old habits, thoughts and attachment. A highlight from Deadman Ghost’s third album Hypocritical Oath, which is out now via Ephem Aural, you can have a first look at Mills and Ben Jones’ video for the single below.
