The month of May is now upon us and with the referendum on the 8th amendment fast approaching we’re seeing a rise of support from artists across the country, urging the people of Ireland to vote YES. We’re pleased to present the Irish premiere of  ‘Like a Girl’ by Dott, featuring a guest appearance from Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz. The video was made by Alison McDonnell-White and features members from Galway Pro-Choice, Galway Parents for Choice and Galway Roller Derby as well as lots of footage of recent marches for women’s rights in Galway. The band along with the many supporters in Galway wish to spread their message out to as many people as they can with their anthem for repealing the 8th. Anna McCarthy from the band had this to say about it:

“Well, is it a boy or a thing?” A question I overheard a man enquire about a new born baby when I was a little girl growing up in the West of Ireland… As if to say, “if it’s not a boy, it’s useless to me”. This puzzled me and made me wonder, “why on a earth would a boy be any better than a girl?”

It has always bothered me when people say that doing something ‘Like a Girl’ means they did it weakly or substandard. To put this out-dated notion to bed, I wrote this song to remind people that doing something ‘Like a Girl’ means it will be powerful and no shit will be taken. It’s especially relevant in Ireland at the moment with the fast approaching Referendum on Reproductive Rights (voting on May 25th). Irish women and girls have spent years fighting for their reproductive rights, demanding a referendum to change archaic and unsafe Irish Law. And now we are a matter of weeks away from the referendum finally happening, all because of the fierce and tireless work of the women’s groups of Ireland.

So, what I’m trying to say is, if you’re going to do something important, you’d better hope that everyone says you did it like a girl.

The connection with Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz started when Dott opened for Sad13 last year. ‘We kept in touch, and after listening to her album “Slugger” about consent, support and feminism, it made perfect sense for Sadie to appear on this track. We were so excited when she was into the idea and she did some killer guitars on the song.’

Like a Girl is taken from Dott’s upcoming album Heart Swell which will be out on Graveface Records (US) on June 8th 2018.
