This week’s Monday Mixtape comes courtesy of Cork maestro Cian Sweeney, the mind behind 1000 Beasts. Known for his collaborative ethos – bringing together a rotating cast of vocalists and musicians to craft genre-blurring electronic pop – Sweeney has racked up over 13 million streams, proving that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
With the release of his new single ‘Twin 47’ last Friday, it marks a first for 1000 Beasts – featuring his own (heavily manipulated) vocals and closing the chapter on last year’s Burning Flower project. Dive into his handpicked selections – from Men I Trust and Glass Beams, to Maribou State, Khruangbin and more – below.
Mk.gee – Alesis
The man of the moment—everyone’s trying to figure out that guitar tone.
Khruangbin – Pon Pón
Khruangbin might just be my favourite on this whole list. Picking one song is near impossible, I didn’t think they could do it but their latest album is at another level. Seeing them live in Dublin last November only cemented their status for me, unbelievable show.
Men I Trust – Billie Toppy
Men I Trust will forever be my lockdown band. They dropped this gem about two years ago, and it already feels timeless. Adore this track & adore them.
Maribou State – Steal
For production chops and vocal delivery, it doesn’t get much better. A bit of an oldie at this stage, but an essential pick.
David Rawlings – Cumberland Gap
A curveball, but ever since hearing this in The Gentlemen, I’ve had the album on repeat. Special shoutout to Money Is The Meat in The Coconut too.
Huw Marc Bennett – Pinc Sunset
One of those gems that Discovery Weekly randomly throws at you. Love this tune from Wales.
Glass Beams – Mahal
Glass Beams have been on my radar since their first EP—plus, a close friend in Melbourne keeps me updated on them. They played ATN last August; a psychedelic rave with guitars. Absolutely massive sound, serious show. I think a lot of people were talking about them after. Ten out of ten for aesthetics too.
Dried Spider – Everybody Wins
A little gem that’s been sitting on my most-played list forever. Big fan.
