  • Rave New World w/ Forrests mix

In the second of our sporadic guest mixes from our favourite DJs and artists from the island of Ireland, we have a fascinating tread through the library of an act that’s on the cusp of something big. Dublin-based duo Forrests released their debut Wilder on Blast First Petite a few years back, and after some time spent gigging and writing, they’re back with Organs. Self-released, it’s a glorious barrel of noise and beauty. They’ve put together a really excellent mix for us, moving from electronic forebears Throbbing Gristle and Laurie Spiegel to present-day luminaries Leon Vynehall, Willie Burns and Mica Levi. Artwork by Sarah…

  • Holly Herndon @ Spiegeltent, Dublin

It’s hard to think of an appropriate introduction for Holly Herndon. Her latest album, Platform on 4AD/RVNG, blends vocal explorations, teasing ASMR and the occasional burst of full-on techno. She’s also got an academic bent to her work, studying for her doctorate in composition at Stanford. In recent months she has been involved in Infiltrate with Love, a fundraiser in support of imprisoned whistle-blower Chelsea Manning. All this might lead one to believe that her performances could carry an air of dry or overly cerebral seriousness, but instead, her appearance at Dublin’s Fringe Festival was at turns playful, dream-like and, put…

  • Call Super – Migrant

Call Super’s bios on Twitter and Tumblr read “confuse, construct”. It’s important to bear in mind when navigating his ever-growing catalogue — just when one thinks he’s settled on a style or direction, he upends expectations and jumps into something either head-bangingly intense or daringly mellifluous. Following the impeccably layered and textured Suzi Ecto full-length for Houndstooth last year his next release was the two-track Fluenka Mitsu EP for Greek label Nous Disques, the first of which sounded nothing like anything he’d released before. Rolling, rumbling melodies run unchecked for 10 solid minutes on ‘Fluenka’s Shelf’, while thunderous echoes abound overhead…

  • Roslyn Steer – Still Moving

Roslyn Steer is a member of Morning Veils, who specialise in “forgotten folk”. She is also a PhD student at NUI Maynooth, writing a thesis on screaming at the department of music. These two interests come together on her solo release Still Moving, a tape for her own label KantCope (a delightful play on words). Side One is taken up fully by the title track, a half-hour meandering body of work that shifts between chilling spoken word, drawn-out, lilting harmonica and twisted church bells that meet rugged guitar distortion. A huge entity, its breadth and ambition is matched by its…

  • Rave New World (10/7)

Aidan Hanratty delivers the lowdown on all the very best electronic gigs, tracks, mixes and releases of the week. Antóin is off at the fabled Freerotation weekender in Wales, but despite the Twitter buzz it’s not the only place to be seen this weekend. There’s a rake of stuff happening, even into next week, so don’t feel like you’re missing out too much. Subject – DJ QU at Pacino’s Friday 10 July 2015 House mainstay DJ QU brings his stately presence to Pacino’s, while a host of local talent is set to play at this three-room affair. Lubomyr Melnyk with Otto…

  • Benjamin Finger – Pleasurably Lost/Motion Reverse

Norwegian producer Benjamin Finger is having quite a prolific year. An insatiable creator, he moves between genres and modes of production without any pressure to stick in one particular lane. Having released the melancholic Pleasurably Lost on niche French label Eilean Rec some months back, he’s just put out Motion Reverse on Dutch-based Shimmering Moods. The two albums are blissful and haunting in equal measure, yet express their respective ideas in hugely opposing fashions. Recorded in Oslo over a period of three years, Pleasurably Lost was inspired by Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz. This writer’s work was concerned with paradox and…
