From 2014’s stellar Leafy Stiletto to last year’s Frankly, I Mutate, Paddy Hanna has always delivered the goods, and then some, on the album front. In a couple of months’ time, we’ve naturally come to expect more of the same from one of the country’s most consistently rewarding songwriting voices. Set for release via Strange Brew on October 16th, The Hill – which was recorded by Girl Band’s Daniel Fox – is headed by new single ‘Colosseum’, a self-described Doo Wop song about Gladiators, “or more specifically a song that deals with feeling out of step in a world not made for…

Hands down one of the country’s most idiosyncratic solo artists, Meljoann is a musical mind positively resistant to second-guessing. Taken from her forthcoming “anti-capitalised themed” album HR, recently singles ‘Company Retreat’ and ‘O Supervisor’ presented an artist whose sonic vision is matched by a perfectly unpigeonholeable visual body of work. New single ‘Business Card’ goes one further. Accompanied by easily one of our favourite Irish videos of the year thus far, it’s a deft and masterfully disorientating effort from an artist very much on the rise.

In case you missed it, Friday saw the surprise, name-your-price release of Postcard Versions‘ new LP, following up on their debut – one of Ireland’s finest indie rock albums of last year. Messrs Paddy Ormond and Ross Hamer – of The Claque, Music City, Oh Boland and more – are back with another ten warming, bite-size gems, adding to the city’s not-insubstantial bedroom-pop canon – born not out of aesthetic, but economic necessity. One of the island’s most consistently intriguing musical minds, Dan Walsh is a composer and drummer who has spent the last few years honing and expanding his hyper-explorative craft. Beyond performing with TTA favourites The Bonk and Ireland’s premier rock n’ roll band (their words – but who are we to disagree?) The Tan Jackets, his output as Fixity has been reliably nonpareil. On August 17th, Walsh will push further still via FIXITY 6, a new, seven-track release available on limited edition cassette. Featuring Muireann Levis of Elastic Sleep and Magdalena on theremin, and accompanied by visuals courtesy of David…

Galway’s Captain A has shared his second new track of the summer, ‘Dark Matter Mariner’. The shadowy instrumental, as eerie and vast as its title suggests, follows July’s ‘Meaning Obscure’, and finds Captain A continuing his ventures away from psych rock and gnarled folk into the world of electronic music. Where 2019’s ‘Dog In The Woods’ was tender and inward-looking, ‘Dark Matter Mariner’ confronts much loftier subject matter, but with a similarly poignant sense of isolation. “It is the soundtrack to the first voyages made by humans into the realms of dark matter and dark energy,” he explains. Drifting, muffled…

Moving on Music and Improvised Music Company have announced a 2020/2021 BAN BAM creative commissioning and career development opportunity to all Irish-born or resident female and gender-minority music-makers across the island of Ireland working in jazz and improvised music. This follows IMC’s similar 2017/18 programme and MOM’s succession of emerging artist programmes, both of which have elevated many of our favourite Irish acts. Available across jazz and creative music, three composers will be selected, each receiving a €2500 commission fee to compose for duo, trio or quartet. The composition period will be followed by 12 months of bespoke creative and career development support and consultation from both organisations,…
