Belfast-based artist Kitt Philippa has won the Best Album prize at this year’s Northern Ireland Music Prize. The Armagh native scooped the annual prize for their debut album, Human. As well as taking the title, they also walked away with the £3000 prize money. In the other categories, New Pagans won Best Live Act, Mark McCambride aka Arborist won Best Single for ‘Here Comes The Devil’ and Sasha Samara won the Oh Yeah Contender Award. Having released their stellar latest single ‘Paranoia’ back in February – and with a two-part album, Kingdoms, on the horizon – Belfast-based alt-rock trio A Northern Light will play a live Thin Air Tuesday Throwdown in Lavery’s Belfast Back Bar on Tuesday, May 17. Having formed back in the starry-eyed days of 2010, Belfast-based alt-rock trio A Northern Light have always leaped straight for the jugular, a tradition which their rousing new single, ‘Paranoia’, more than comfortably attests to. Recorded for the most part with Neal Calderwood at Manor Park studio, much of the instrumentation on the track, including its web of synths, drum loops and backing vocals, were recorded by the band at home. Driven by Omar Ben Hassine’s urging drum-and bass rhythm – often an ANL sonic trademark – it’s a subtly layered, typically impassioned effort from the threesome. Belfast-based alt-rock three-piece A Northern Light have unveiled the video to their new single, ‘Kill It’. Directed by Sean Duncan of Red Cap Productions, the video was edited by the band’s bassist Colm Laverty. The single will be officially released on August 5. Watch the video below.
