In this installment of Track Record, Michael Orange aka Feather Beds selects some of his favourite records, from Field Music to Omni. Photos by Ellen Pentony Field Music – Field Music I’ve gone for the first self-titled album. I can remember first hearing the song Working To Work, which is on their Tones Of Town album and I couldn’t believe it. I loved everything about it and then got really into the first album. I remember going to see them in Whelans in Dublin around 2007 and it’s still one of my favourite gigs of all time. This album is just…

Over the last few years, Dublin’s Michael Orange aka Feather Beds has proven himself to be one of the country’s most forward-pushing experimental pop auteurs. Spanning dream-pop, shoegaze, electronica, ambient, and experimentalism, his music has sedated, burrowed and curveballed in equal measure on releases including 2015’s ‘Ah Stop’. This May, the London-based artist and producer will release his highly-anticipated third studio album, Softer Measures. Having snuck a preview, we’re certain it’ll go down as one of the year’s most inspired, palette-spanning full-length releases. To help make the case, today, we’re very pleased to premiere the album’s lead single, ‘Really Disney’.…

Ah, 2020 eh? Unless you were living off the grid in a self-made banana bread house whilst rocking yourself gently to various iterations of ‘Happy Birthday’ as you washed your hands, then you will know that despite collectively living through the pandemic there were plenty of Irish songs to get excited about. 100 to be precise. We’ve listened to them on repeat since we couldn’t attend gigs, raves, or house parties so we’re certain we’ve selected the finest this little locked down island has to offer. It’s safe to say this year epitomised the true meaning of community in this country…

Masterfully blurring the lines between dream-pop, shoegaze, electronica, ambient, and experimentalism, London-based Dublin artist Michael Orange aka Feather Beds is easily one of the island’s most idiosyncratic musical minds. Premiered this morning on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC 6 Music show, his new single ‘Fragile’ is a first-rate first taste for newcomers. Doubling up as the lead single from his forthcoming EP, Fragile/Temper, it marries carefully-crafted soundscapes with a rush of 8bit blips to create something that, despite nodding to the likes of Ariel Pink and The Cure, is unmistakably his. Just as inviting is Orange’s homespun visuals for the single, which you can…
