• Stream: Replete – Legislate feat. Bini

Earlier this year, we flagged up the Zizek at the Discotheque, the most recent collection from Dublin based/Kilkenny native DJ and producer Replete (aka Peter Lawlor). Following on now from that cassette release, Lawlor’s latest outing, ‘Legislate feat. Bini’ is set to land on May 5th. The track will appear on the Hà Nội Night 12″ compilation on Vietnam’s Ele Records and will appear alongside cuts from Contours (Rhythm Section) and Sameed (Local Talk). In a similar vein to his other productions to date, ‘Legislate’ is a soulful, melodious slice of house that would serve as the ideal mood setter for nights in venues like The…

  • Stream: tapedesk – three euro and forty cent

You know what’s missing from your Friday? Yes, you guessed it! An experimental, ambient vocal work composed using flipped coins (adding to a total of €3.40), eight notes, a notebook, and something to record the results onto. And that’s about all we know about tapedesk, a mysterious artist out of Dublin whose first release is both playfully cynical and utterly beguiling. As this 15-minute piece plays through its eight movements it is easy to become absorbed in the sound of the looped, droning vocals. Reminiscent of fellow Dublin experimentalists Rollers/Sparkers or even, at a push, pioneering vocal manipulator Meredith Monk, this is  a welcome helping…

  • Stream: New Jackson – Anya’s Piano

In the lead up to the release of his debut LP under the New Jackson monicker, David Kitt has released a 12″ led by album track ‘Anya’s Piano’. From Night To Night is set for release on May 19th through the terrific All City label. ‘Anya’s Piano’ is an expansive and atmospheric cut, chock with groove, hypnotic double bass and a lavish saxophone part from Terry Edwards [PJ Harvey/Gallon Drunk]. The other two tracks on the 12″, which will not appear on From Night To Night, are equally rich. ‘In My Room’ boasts a deep, basement energy and mechanism while ‘Leave Me Making’ incites a swaying, breezy feeling amid its…

  • Stream: Rejjie Snow – Flexin (feat. Ebenezer)

Dublin native Rejjie Snow has unveiled his second track of the year in the form of ‘Flexin’. Produced by  Rahki (who also worked on his previous releases ‘Crooked Cops’ and ‘Pink Beetle’) and featuring a frenetic refrain from Ebenezer, the cut is yet another tightly wound string to Snow’s bow. Taken from his forthcoming album Dear Annie set to drop later in the year on 300 Entertainment, ‘Flexin’ is another showcase of Rejjie’s ferocious, brazen flow and statement of intent with cutting, alliterative verses stomping over hard-hitting, symphonic production. If you had been sleeping on Rejjie Snow’s output, about now would be the time to wake up. Not…

  • Stream: Fionn Regan – Cormorant Bird

Last month, Fionn Regan returned in style with ‘The Meetings of the Waters’, the title track from his forthcoming fifth studio album. Today he releases it’s equally beguiling follow-up in the form of ‘Cormorant Bird’. A swooning slice of masterfully-produced chamber-pop in the vein of Department of Eagles, the single suggests something especially special in the waiting for the full-length. The Meetings of the Waters is out on April 14 through his own imprint 常に愛TSUNENI AI/Abbey Records.

  • Stream: Daithí – Holiday Home

Daithí is always at his strongest when his music is at its most introspective. On ‘Holiday Home’, a fresh cut taken from his forthcoming EP of the same name, the Clare based producer proves this once again with a deep groove and weaving, pulsating melodies. The track harks to the likes of both of Dan Snaith’s monikers, Caribou and Daphni as well as bearing some loyalty to the melodic propulsion of George Fitzgerald‘s 2015 album Fading Love. It is carried and made into something truly special with the bodhrán sample that carries through it. The sample once again shows the producers affinity to incorporating elements of trad music…

  • Stream: Paddy Hanna – Sunday Milkshake

Masterful Dublin songsmith Paddy Hanna has unveiled yet another song in the form of ‘Sunday Milkshake’, ahead of the release of new single ‘Bad Boys’ on March 24. Featuring hints of a motorik beat, filled out with a lush orchestral arrangement, Hanna has once again put his genre-tapping to full use in proving why he’s one of the finest, most artful pop songwriters in Ireland – if his string of singles from mid-2015 following 2014 debut album Leafy Stiletto didn’t already do it – check them out on Soundcloud. On its themes, Hanna states that Sunday Milkshake is “a tale of realisation, of sleeping on a…

  • Stream: Naoise Roo – Crying (Roy Orbison Cover – A Cappella)

Sometimes, stripping songs back to their pure, elemental basis reveals something uniquely special. A point in case can be found with Dublin chanteuse par excellence Naoise Roo’s a cappella cover of Roy Orbison’s timeless ‘Crying’. Recorded at a #strikeforrepeal fundraiser last weekend, the rendition – which sees Roo’s exquisite vocal poise command gleam into sharp focus under three minutes – is simultaneously stoic and strong; meditative and utterly defiant. Released yesterday as part of yesterday’s Strike For Repeal takeover, stream the track – recorded by Gav Hennessy -below.

  • Stream: Paddy Hanna – Bad Boys

Dublin songsmith Paddy Hanna has returned with his first new music since 2015. ‘Bad Boys’ sees Hanna continuing to move from the bockety-pop mastery of his 2014 LP Leafy Stiletto into the realm of textured balladry that defined more recent singles ‘Austria’ and ‘Underprotected’. There are nods to Roy Orbison in his now staple croon and similarities to be found with the likes Kurt Vile and Boxer era The National in the encapsulating strings and horns that decorate the track. Hanna’s knack for engrossing, infectious song-craft is on full display here and with more new music at the end of the month you would be remiss to sleep on this one.…

  • Stream: Lighght – Superstar (unmix)

Cork based electronic producer and promoter with the Diffract club night, Lighght, has released a new track. And yes, before you ask, it is of course swirling, atmospheric edit of Jamelia’s 2003 R&B classic ‘Superstar’. Duh. Having put out a variety of glitching, industrial tracks reminiscent of Nicolas Jaar and Dorian Concept in the past year or so, the producer will be releasing more singles and audiovisual projects in the coming months as well as continuing to host the regular Diffract events.
