Having renamed themselves as the (assumingly) similarly Sonic Youth-inspired Evvol, the Berlin-based trio once known as Kool Thing have re-emerged with the bold, blippy and rather quite brilliant ‘Your Love’. The track is taken from their forthcoming album, Eternalism, which is released on May 18. We’re very much looking forward to getting our eager mitts on that.

“Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence”, King Crimson’s Robert Fripp once observed when the poetic muse had taken hold. Or perhaps it was the wine. Regardless, Fripp would doubtless have approved as music, wine and silence, in various combinations, were all in good supply at Snowpoet’s Dublin concert. The concert was part of music production company and record label Ergodos’ series of specially curated concerts sponsored by Santa Rita, the legendary Chilean wine makers, whose stunning red and white wines on offer at the reception teased loose the tongues and gently flushed the cheeks of the…

Charlie XCX has quickly grown from the ‘featuring’ artist of other artists’ hits to a main attraction. Charlie (Charlotte Atchinson) wrote the hit ‘I Love It’ and let the Swedish pop duo Icona Pop record it. Last summer she featured on Iggy Azalea‘s Fancy. Now, finally, she gets to keep the spotlight on herself. As an album, Sucker is a bit repetitive. Each track would work well on any commercial radio playlist but played one after the other, the songs blend together. ‘Boom Clap’ is a great single – and it is easy to imagine any track from Sucker being…

Recorded and engineered by Solar Bears‘ Rian Trench at Meadow Studios, Co. Wicklow last year, Dublin quartet Alarmist have unveiled ‘Morning, Kepler’, the lead single from their forthcoming debut album. A vibrant, suitably sun-kissed instrumental effort for the first day of Spring, the track weaves a sublime patterns over almost five minutes, leaving one with an even stronger impression that Alarmist remain one of the country’s most forward-thinking and distinctive outfits. The follow up to 2013’s Pal Magnet EP, the band’s forthcoming album is expected to drop in the Autumn. With a Belfast date on the cards, check out Alarmist’s forthcoming tour dates…

In the first of a new regular feature called Roving Eye, our photographer Tara Thomas sets off around Europe with some of the best and brightest bands our fair Isle has to offer. Documenting the trials and tribulations of touring life, Tara heads to Brussels with The Minutes. In her own words, she breaks down the entire proceedings from load-in to bed-down. ___ Brussels is a surprising city. My expectations of a drab grey place were unfounded, for it’s emblem is the Manneken Pis, a urinating little boy. He symbolises the rebellious nature of the city and its capacity for…

After last week’s column promising more music and such didn’t materialise, this week’s is a wee bit of a catch-up. However – plug, plug, plug! – we’ll kick off by putting in a shout for our Cork launch on Saturday at the Crane Lane for the mag. Issue 5 of the mag (the cover pictured) features a full-length piece on the Altered Hours, from their beginnings and debut release ‘Downstream’, to their upcoming album and time in Berlin. We’ll also have an Inbound on Leeside multi-piece groove ensemble Shookrah, among so, so much more, and it’ll be available exclusively at…

In the latest installment of Track Record, Conor Cusack from Dublin band Spies gives us an insight into his prized record collection, featuring favourites from the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen and Kraftwerk, as well as our very own Girl Band and Paddy Hanna. Photos by Aidan Kelly Murphy. Girl Band – France 98 As you may, or may not be aware, Girl Band have recently signed a big dick record deal with Rough Trade. I know we’ve had our differences in the past, but I was willing to put this behind me and congratulate them on their success. I recently met the…
