After a Good Friday spent away from the web, Aidan Hanratty and Antoin Lindsay are back with the best gigs, tracks and mixes of the week.
Gigs
Dip with Lumigraph and Sias B2B at Bar Tengu, Dublin
Friday 1 April
Two Dublin heroes, Lumigraph and Sias, aka Frank B, go back to back tonight at this long-running party, while the regular residents take care of things in the main room. AH
Moderat at Vicar Street, Dublin
Wednesday 6 April
Another stellar team-up here, as Modeselektor and Apparat join forces once more in support of their third album, III. Colossal beats meet yearning melodies, and the trio’s general weirdness and frivolity underpins the entire project. AH
Tracks
Rihanna ft. Drake – Work (Murlo Remix)
The legend that is Murlo has turned out the definitive remix of one of the best pop tracks of the year. It’s brimming with his unmistakable melody and tasteful take on dancehall and soca. Anyone else out there planning reworks take note. AL
Buz Ludzha – Basslines For Life [100% Silk]
Buz Ludzha may be an unfamiliar name, but the distinctive glow and hum of ‘Basslines For Life’ gives a lot away. It is, in fact, RNW favourite The Cyclist under a different alias and once you know that, it makes a whole lot of sense. Here he’s linked up with the mighty 100% Silk on a gorgeous throbbing and hazy house kick and makes me wonder why it took so long for the Derry man to crop up on the label. A match made in heaven. AL
Simoncino – Beyond The Dance (Mr. Fingers Dark Mix) [L.I.E.S.]
Larry Heard is having a banner year, with his Mr. Fingers 2016 12″ for Alleviated Records well received in all quarters. He’s turned in a brace of remixes of Simoncino’s ‘Beyond The Dance’ for L.I.E.S. and they’ve shared this solid burner for our digital listening pleasure. Rolling, thunderous percussion and eerie synth patterns bring the dark of the title to life. AH
Gage – Talon’s Reach [CrazyLegs]
Two years on from his debut Telo / Shiftin release, Gage (pictured) returns to CrazyLegs with the mind-bending Mercury EP. Flitting between droning abstractions and blistering post-club or whatever you want to call it, it’s a thrilling ride. ‘Talon’s Reach’ is definitely one the latter side of things, a rib-shattering trip through uncertain dance-floor territory. AH
Mixes
Interstellar Funk – Rush Hour Weekenders Podcast
Turning out a mix for Rush Hour, Interstellar Funk brings out a superb and genuinely varied collection of deep cuts for just over an hour. It’s a really diverse and, frankly, weird selection of stuff from the Dutchman and definitely worth checking out if you’re feeling in the mood for something a bit murky. AL
CMD – avant_mutek 03.25.2016
Montreal DJ CMD shared this selection from this recent set warming up for Monolake, Pearson Sound and Tessela. Deep and fast-paced techno abounds, building perfectly towards the bigger names on the bill, it shows just how good a warm-up DJ can be. AH
