Gigs

Galway May Bank Holiday DUB Weekender
Friday 29 April

It’s a bit of a heavy lineup in Galway tonight, headed by Digital Mystikz man Mala. His second album, Mirrors, is due soon, inspired by his travels in Peru, and now is as good a time as any (well, save maybe 2005) to catch this legend play. Irish talent Don Rosco, Bob from Standard Crew, Jonezy and Welfare are on support. AH

Discotekken & Membership present: Asquith, Ethyl & Flori at Bar Tengu, Dublin
Friday 29 April

Asquith is head of Lobster Theremin, and also its related Lobster Distribution arm, which handles a simply phenomenal number of labels. His taste is undeniable, so pop down for what will no doubt be a barrel of fun. AH

Out To Lunch with Honey Soundsystem, Octo Octa at Bar Tengu, Dublin
Sunday 1 May

It’s almost a rule that we include Out To Lunch gigs in this column, but we couldn’t leave out San Fransisco’s Honey Soundsystem. They’re a super team of DJs, they have a top label as well and on top of that they’re behind the truly excellent Dark Entries series. Octo Octa, meanwhile, has released on 100% Silk, Running Back and Deepblak, and this weekend she’s both DJing and playing live. Melly (of Where To Now? fame) and Cáit Fahey (Dip) will be going back to back throughout the night too. Big. AH

Rolando + Delano Smith @ Aether & Echo, Belfast
Sunday 1 May

‘Knights of the Jaguar’ may well be ringing in your ears if you were clubbing in the 90s, and ex–Underground Resistance man DJ Rolando will no doubt be bringing vibes this Sunday. He’ll be joined with Chicago legend Delano Smith who doesn’t call round this way much. Definitely get some bank holiday vibes down here. AL

Tracks

Machine Woman – I Can Mend Your Broken Heart (Kassem Mosse Remix) [Where To Now?)

Gorgeous remix of Machine Woman from the mighty Kassem Mosse. Mosse takes the original and turns it in a lush and deep 10 minutes of bliss in the way that only he can. Part of what will undoubtedly be an essential release on Where To Now? AL

Fetnat & Lovnee – Marnic [Nous Disques]

Nous drop some lovely sounds all day long, and here is yet another. Fetnat features on the label’s upcoming white label compilation release, while Lovnee is seemingly a total newcomer. This track flirts with outsider house but the beats are choppy enough to keep things unexpected. AH

Mixes

Ben UFO @ Twitch

There is absolutely 100% no reason for you to listen to anything else for the next five hours. Ben UFO is one of the greatest our generation has produced and the fact he played and uploaded such an astounding set at Belfast’s own Twitch is pretty breathtaking. He’s in full swing here and from start to finish this is sublime, there’s not much else to say. AL

DJ Haram – Mixpak FM 095

DJ Haram has been making waves recently. This mix for the ever-brilliant Mixpak is a great example of why. It’s full banging sounds from all over the place. Expect Jersey club, Lotic and Rihanna, as well as some of DJ Haram’s own productions. AL

Willow – NTS Radio MCR 24.04.16

Willow is a rising star of sorts, at least in characteristically understated fashion. Her sets for NTS are sublime, a joyous mix of beautifully deep house. This week’s show is a perfect encapsulation of her subtle yet energising approach. AH

Crack Mix 111 – Karen Gwyer

A new mix from Karen Gwyer is always worth a look, but this one opens with a track from RNW favourite Ellll before jumping into the magnificent ‘Steals’ by Bruce. It continues to traverse a field of house and techno that’s thick, unctuous and unknowable, a tangible sense of unease pervades the mix before heading straight on into wild laser territory. AH
