  • Album Stream: Sea Pinks – Dreaming Tracks

Nine months in, Neil Brogan’s Sea Pinks have unveiled what could well be contender for our favourite Irish album of 2014: Dreaming Tracks. Going one better than 2012’s superb Freak Waves – a feat in itself – the album conjures brooding, sun-split coastal trawl imminent Autumnal solipsism via ten tracks of cello-lined melancholia and masterfully blithe jangle-pop. According to the band, “This a record about disorientation, ambivalence, and the overlapping of past, present and future that can happen in dream states as well as in waking life.” Dreaming Tracks is available as a Limited Edition Shell Pink 180g 12″ vinyl LP, which can…

  • EP Download: The Altered Hours – Outskirts

Currently out of action for a few weeks due to injury, Cork psych-rock conjurers The Altered Hours have unveiled a three-track mini EP, Outskirts. Speaking of the release – recorded at different times in different places – the band’s frontman Cathal Mac Gabhann said, “We just wanted to share it as its a particular psychedelic feeling to all three that work well together.” And that they do: cushioned by the swelling ambience of ‘Joy’ and ‘Outskirts’, the two-chord swoon of ‘I’m On a High’ hits home, proving a super-stripped-back masterstroke evoking the likes of Galaxie 500, Yo La Tengo and…

  • Stream: This Is Me Dead – Vega

It’s been a quiet couple of years for This Is Me Dead. Known for their melodic noise rock and most active during 2011, the Belfast four piece have decided to dust off the cobwebs and rear their heads once again for their new record Vega. A collection of songs old and new, their three track EP is an eclectic mix of mid 90’s power pop and modern day post-punk that is a refreshing addition to the musical landscape of Northern Ireland. Recorded at Millbank Studios in Lisburn and mastered by Rob Arbelo, their EP is available on Bandcamp to stream…

  • Stream: Slow Skies – Bodies

The follow-up to the beguiling ‘Ice Field’ – released at the start of the month – Dublin dream pop duo Slow Skies have gone one better with ‘Bodies’, a wonderfully unravelling, reverb-soaked effort that lulls and summons in equal proportion. Delicate and funereal, the track – conjuring the likes of Hope Sandoval, Explosions In The Sky, Hanne Hukkelberg, Hope of the States and – teases with its perfectly plodding pace and Karen Sheridan’s increasingly beatific vocals. ‘Bodies’ will feature on Slow Skies’ forthcoming EP, Keepsake, set for release via faction on September 26. The duo play Donegal’s Balor Arts Centre on September 29, Dublin’s Sugar…
