Running until May 16th, this year’s NI Mental Health Arts Fest has brought together a programme of varied, vivid arts events that aim to create a platform for high-quality artwork that deals compassionately and intelligently with mental health. Among the highlights so far is new music from Belfast drone pop septet Documenta. Taken from the Joe Greene-fronted band’s forthcoming double LP, Drone Pop #3, ‘Silverwood’ captures the band’s craft at its most carefully woven. D eft and darkly in all the right places, the seven-minute track is accompanied with a stellar video by Belfast filmmaker, photographer and occasional TTA contributor Colm…

It’s a chilling story, that of a woman prematurely buried, presumed dead until awoken by a grave robber attempting to amputate her finger to make off with her valuable ring. Often attributed to early 18th century Lurgan woman Margorie McCall, her grave, pictured on the cover of this EP, does indeed state “lived once, buried twice” – though the existence of countless versions of this tale all over Europe, attributed to various different women from anywhere as early as the 14th century, does sow doubt on its veracity. Nonetheless it remains an infamous piece of local folklore, and Belfast’s finest…

A break from their planned trilogy of Drone Pop albums, ahead of its final chapter, Documenta will release their first music since 2015’s Drone Pop #1 through Belfast’s Touch Sensitive Records on October 12. Titled Lady With The Ring, it’s the story of “lived once, buried twice” Margorie McCall, who lived in rural Ireland in the early 18th century. She succumbed to a fever and was hastily buried in Lurgan’s Shankill cemetery. Her grave was visited by “a tramp of disreputable character with a reckless and thieving disposition” who drew blood as he tried to prise the ring from her finger, awakening the dead woman who subsequently lived…

We recently snuck a sneak peek of the forthcoming new EP from Belfast’s drone-pop septet Documenta and let it be known: we’re in for something very special indeed. Featuring the inimitable Will Carruthers of Spacemen 3, Spiritualized et. al, the five-track Lady with Ring will be released on vinyl EP and digital formats via Touch Sensitive Records on Friday, October 12. A release that doubles up as a departure from the band’s Drone Pop trilogy, the EP revolves around the story of Margorie McCall. We’re told: “McCall lived in rural Ireland in the early 18th century. She succumbed to a fever and…

The Menagerie has really gone from strength to strength since reopening late last year. The galaxy print exterior may have been replaced by a more austere matt black emulsion and the management may even have decided to indulge patrons with something as frivolously bourgeois as a mirror in the gents but the soul of the bar and its reputation as Belfast’s consummate coven of alternative spirit remain wholly intact. Tonight’s appearance by Belfast’s sprawling drone pop ensemble Documenta and Cork based rockers Altered Hours gives the thunderous new PA system ample opportunity to shine, proving once again that the Menagerie…

Currently on tour in Germany with Dave Hause, Kilrea doom-folk master Robyn G Shiels released arguably his strongest single to date, ‘If I Were Thy Demon’, back in November last year. Four months on, the track has been totally – and rather brilliantly – reworked by Belfast drone-pop band Documenta. Alternatively titled ‘DocuDemonta’, the remix – which is released as an exclusive pre-order of upcoming Robyn G Shiels EP, I Have Loved The Stars Too Fondly To Be Fearful Of The Night – makes for a blistering four and a half minutes. …Fearful Of The Night by Robyn G Shiels
