Looking back at the sheer breath and wealth of EPs that were released from artists across the country this year made us giddy with joy and excitement. The boundless evolution of style, diversity, experimentation and confidence on display in 2017 was as momentous as we had ever seen or heard and, as such, narrowing this list down to 15 was no easy task. The following is a list of artists who we felt pushed themselves to new, ambitious heights and creative territories this year, who delivered both on record and in live settings and who proudly represented the fecund growth…

Having started to premiere tracks from the EP back in October of last year, Wicklow ambient hip-hop duo Gumshoe have let Sun Kisses The Moon out into the world in full. With previously released tracks ‘yom kippur’, ‘ninbasu’ and ‘forgotten weapons’ being ethereal teasers, the rest of the collection continues in much the same vein with delightfully odd vocal samples, sparse rhythms and brittle melodies coursing throughout its seven tracks. ‘a divisive nature’ is captivating with its stumbling bass throb and Gold Panda reminiscent melodic samples. ‘cherrylane’ is pure hypnosis with its languid keys, trills and swoops, jazz samples and a surreal spoken vocal detailing someone’s…

Wicklow based ambient hip-hop duo Gumshoe have returned with ‘Forgotten Weapons’, their fourth release since they breezed into existence last year. The track is another glistening slice of spacious, throbbing electronics and sliced up vocal samples. The pair’s penchant for lush atmosphere is once again on display here as it was on their previous cuts ‘Yom Kippur’ and ‘Ninbasu’. It is accompanied by a suitably trippy and at points unnerving video directed by Sean Gallagher and starring Miriam Keegan. As she ventures through an eery forest, a darkened house and a hallucinatory mental landscape, the haunting flutes and bass create a sizzling…

Wicklow ambient hip-hop duo Gumshoe have debuted another track. ‘Ninbasu’ is the third cut to be revealed from Shannakie and Yam Faddah (Real names: Conor Murphy and Keith Ferguson) following from October’s lush ‘Yom Kippur’. The track is another ethereal trip from the pair, all fluttering melodies and crisp percussion, drifting to-and-fro between its phases with the most gentle aplomb. ‘Nimbasu’ feels the way your bed does in the five minutes before you have to get up for work. Expect to hear more from Gumshoe in 2017. Find Gumshoe on Facebook

At the end of September, Wicklow based producers Gumshoe revealed themselves, emerging from the undergrowth with the smooth down-tempo cut ‘ducats’. Now the duo of Shannakie and Yam Faddah take a step further into world with the mesmerizing ‘Yom Kippur’, another gently glitching instrumental that blossoms to life with a resonant vocal sample, delicate keys and sprinklings of clicks and claps to push it along. It’s the sort of track that unexpectedly stuns you while effortlessly drifting past, a beautifully simple slice of organic electronica that will appeal to fans of ambient hip-hop producer Shlohmo and the quieter parts of Flying Lotus‘ catalogue. The track is accompanied…
