Ahead of their first Dublin headline show in over two years tomorrow night Hugh O’Dwyer talks to Tandem Felix frontman David Tapley about their new music and returning to the stage. Tickets for their November 7th show upstairs in Whelans can be purchased here. A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, the sound of Tandem Felix has changed quite a bit since some of the band’s earlier work such as Ryan Hoguet and the Popcorn EP. What would you attribute this change in style to? A few things really; I’ve loved country and country-related music for so long. I…

After two years of near total silence, Dublin’s Tandem Felix have returned just in time for Autumn’s drowsy descent. Picking up where 2015’s Comma left off, David Tapley’s soft-tempered croon floats along atop a trademark alt-country backdrop courtesy of Éna Brennan (Dowry, Bad Sea), Jeffrey Courtney (Spies), Evan Keogh and Conor Muldowney. Re-introducing some of the bockety-toy-electronics that brought so much charm to 2013’s Popcorn, ‘Were You There (When They Crucified The Birthday Boy)?’ shows us Tandem Felix back on playful, tongue-in-cheek form, giving us plenty to be excited for when it comes to their debut LP, set to land in 2018. Were You There (When…

On their new EP, Comma, Dublin’s Tandem Felix have toned down the gritty anxiety that added a particularly distorted, glitching atmosphere to their 2013 EP, Popcorn. That grit, which gave Tandem Felix’s folkier basis a very psychedelic edge, has been twisted slightly to incorporate less abrasion and a little more lap steel guitar. The result is that Comma’s five tracks bear a lot of similarity to the likes of Beck’s Sea Change or Morning Phase, or to the more tender points in Wilco’s discography. That’s not to say that the anxiety is gone, however. The lyrics express the same sense of…

Does life imitate art or the other way round? A fundamental question for aesthetes answered simply enough when, prompted by the seated musicians on stage, the audience follow cue and inhabit the dark, seated parameters of the Workman’s Club. Despite the resulting floor space having the inhospitable air of a school disco (circa 1999, god knows what they’re like now) the atmosphere’s closer to a dim lit jazz club. Fitting, perhaps, for the clever work of Jawbone; a folk/blues collective who stray into honky-tonk, swing and delta for good measure. More a showcase than a straight set, the members pay…

In this installment of Track Record we hang out with David A. Tapley from Tandem Felix who after a slight line-up shuffle are on the cusp of releasing their new EP Comma and currently listed as The Guardian’s new band of the week . From the sprawling sounds of Yo La Tengo to his own idol Beck, David’s choices are a huge reflection and influence on the music he puts out. Photos by Aidan Kelly Murphy. Talk Talk – Laughing Stock My friend Felipe introduced me to Talk Talk at a party many moons ago. I immediately picked up their two final albums,…

With a title immediately conjuring the titular despondence of The Twilight Sad or a Mark Kozelek album track, Dublin’s Tandem Felix have unveiled the mellow, Americana-tinged ‘Nothing I Do Will Ever Be Good Enough’. Having featured in the third issue of our monthly physical magazine, the band – sporting a new line-up and notable shift in sound – will release their new EP, Comma, on Trout Records on April 27. Read our feature on the label in the second issue of our magazine online here.
