Friday Mixtape: Owen Strathern (Oh Volcano)

andso

In the first of a new weekly “thing” here at the Thin Air (sometimes “thing” sums it up perfectly, you know?), Oh Volcano’s Owen Strathern delivers the inaugural Friday Mixtape, featuring some of his all-time favourite tracks – everyone from Talking Heads to The Magnetic Fields.

Stream the playlist and read Owen’s thoughts on each track below.

Future Islands – Seasons (Waiting On You): “I saw this track on Letterman and pre-ordered their album right away. The guy is mesmerising and this song is incredible.”

Caged Animals – Teflon Heart: “I heard this track a few years ago and just heard an instrumental of it in a TV ad the other day. I always felt it was massively under-appreciated and feels like a huge song to me.”

Grimes – Oblivion: “There are days I listen to this track five times in a row – simply genius.”

Talking Heads – This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody):

The Magnetic Fields – Andrew In Drag:
“An amazingly catchy and clever song.”

Villagers – The Waves:
“This track is brilliant for many reasons. I didn’t expect this track from Villagers which I feel is the best thing about it.”

Arcade Fire – It’s Never Over (Hey Orpheus):
“My favourite track off their new record – a consistently brilliant band ever-evolving.”

Little Comets – The Blur, the Line and the Thickest of Onions: “One of the best bands in the UK at the minute. Depth in lyrics and progression in songwriting.”

Oh Volcano play their debut headline show at Belfast’s Voodoo on Saturday night (August 2)
