Rave New World (12/02)

kink the thin air

Antoin Lindsay is back! He and Aidan Hanratty run through the best gigs, tracks and mixes of the week.

Gigs

Kink – Live at District 8, Dublin
Friday 12 February

Number 1 on RA’s list of live acts last year, Kink has been rolling out bangers for years, and finally got his due with this particular recognition. See why he got the top spot at District 8, who have a pretty special season of guests this spring. AH

Fleetmac Wood presents I See Your Gypsy at The Sugar Club, Dublin
Friday 12 February

A ludicrous name, I agree, but this show looks like a hoot for fans of the Mac. It’s a loving celebration of their oeuvre, edits and remixes galore, so this should be a whole lot of fun. AH

Tracks

Will DiMaggio – Fusion (Broadcast Mix) [Future Times]

One of those tracks I’ve been hearing crop up in mixes recently (probably because I immediately listen to anything Max D records). I’m very glad this Will DiMaggio track is finally seeing the light of day because its an absolute gem of a house track that dives right into the soul. Future Times continues to bring out pure fire. Kid Antoine – Bodypaint (Florentino Remix)

¡Dios mío! Florentino has been providing us with some fantastic edits over the last few months alongside his exceptional Swing Ting EP. He’s achieved the feat of having tunes that are instantly recognisable and this remix of Kid Antoine (not me) has all the Latino charm we’ve come to expect from him. AL

Ziro & Gemma Dunleavy – Surrender [Crazylegs]

Icy rnb here from Ziro and Dublin’s Gemma Dunleavy. Ziro blew me away last year with a flip on Veracocha’s ‘Carte Blanche’, a trance banger from ’99. This new track uses similarly ravey synths but in beautifully understated fashion, Dunleavy’s heartbroken vocals sitting perfectly atop this frosty bed of sound. This should be huge. AH

Mixes

Sunil Sharpe – RA.506

For techno heads around Ireland, Sunil Sharpe is a familiar name. The Dublin man has been plying his trade in the city for years and his banging sound is a big favourite for crowds there. He’s cropped up a lot more in recent years, affiliations with Blawan and Surgeon giving him a bit of a boost, so it’s no surprise he’s cropped up in the RA podcast. It goes without saying it’s brilliant and his selections span from 25 years ago to the present day. If someone had no idea what techno was, you’d not go far wrong with playing them this. AL

Galcher Lustwerk – Live at Dance Tunnel

Galcher Lustwerk is a rare, rare breed. Everything he does seems to ooze a degree of class, sexiness and groove most of us could only dream of. DJ sets of his are also pretty hard to come by as he doesn’t play out much, so this recording of him at London’s Dance Tunnel is something you should absolutely not sleep on. Smooth as silk, pumpin’ as a tyre centre. AL

null + void with Kirsti feat Junq, 08-02-16

Kirsti Weir’s null+void blog and radio show has now become a label, and this recent show features an excellent live set from Junq at the label launch party a few months back. The first hour is littered with exclusives too, from labels like Houndstooth and CPU. AH

Rinse FM Podcast – Hessle Audio w/ Ben UFO + Duckett

Duckett is part of the UMHS crew, putting out two releases on the label in quick succession last year. He put together this gorgeous mix for the Hessle Audio show last week, apparently all unreleased stuff. It’s delicately ponderous, full of heartfelt longing and maudlin melodies. One for late nights and quiet moments of introspection. On repeat. AH
