Very much the man with the plan, Antoin Lindsay takes a look at the very best electronic gigs, tracks, releases and mixes of the week.
GIGS
Head Front Panel, Sunil Sharpe and Defekt at The Button Factory, Dublin
Friday 14 August
John Heckle has been releasing some brilliant techno as Head Front Panel recently, and you can catch him doing a live set down at The Button Factory tonight. He’ll be accompanied by the ever-present Sunil Sharpe (pictured) and another live set from Defekt. T’will be a heavy one.
Twisted Pepper Closing Weekender, Dublin
Friday 14 & Saturday 15 August
In what can only be described as a massive shame, this weekend will be the last one for Twisted Pepper, as a club at least. With an absolutely stacked lineup of local DJs and artists it’ll be the perfect send off for one of Dublin’s finest. Goes without saying, it’ll be busy, so tickets are advised for this one.
TRACKS
A Made Up Sound – Half Hour Jam On A Borrowed Synth [A Made Up Sound]
This reared its head just last week in Ben UFO’s Rinse FM show, and according to the man himself it got quite the reaction. Clearly riding the wave of excitement, A Made Up Sound has provided us with a snippet of the track. The guy has been producing some of the most captivating and interesting dance music both as AMUS and 2562 in the 7 or 8 years, and its great to see he’s still pulling punches. This one is a proper intense emotional banger that will undoubtedly warp some minds at 2am all over the place. Whether or not it’s actually half an hour long we still don’t know, but what’s been provided so far makes me hope so.
Helena Hauff – Spur [Werkdiscs]
There’s a Helena Hauff LP coming on Actress’ Werkdiscs label next month, and judging by Spur it’s going to be pretty special. Dark and broody electro with shades of Dopplereffekt, it’ll definitely be a good one to soundtrack the nights will begin to slowly draw in soon. I’m not being a downer, promise.
Shanti Celeste – Strung Up [Future Times]
As if I couldn’t love Future Times any more, they’ve only gone and provided us with a new track from Shanti Celeste which will be on their forthcoming Vibe 3 compilation. Shanti has become a big favourite of mine over the last while with her amazing NTS show and gorgeously relaxed productions. Without intending to, I seem to be on a bit of an electro kick this week and this one is in keeping with the vibe, albeit on the more chilled end of the spectrum.
RELEASES + MIXES
Voiski – Fabriclive x Divided Love mix
Voiski is playing Fabric this weekend, and that means he’s provided us with a mix in the build up. It’s chock full of electro and pretty banging techno, and definitely some of the Frenchman’s own new productions in there somewhere. Get excited for what he has in store in the near future.
Samrai – Generic Mix #21
It’s an all-Manchester affair this time round, with one of the finest DJs in the city, Samrai, providing a mix for Generic Greeting Collective’s mix series. He’s made his name DJing at his Swing Ting night which focusses heavily on grime, garage and dancehall, but this mix also shows off his knowledge of soul, R&B, funk and more. A lesson in great music from a true head.
Hodge with Ossia & Karen Gwyer – Rinse FM Podcast
Hodge’s Rinse FM shows are always a treat, and this time he’s brought along company in the form of Karen Gwyer and his fellow Bristolian Ossia with guest mixes. Even with the differing styles between the three, the vibe keeps fairly relaxed and the two hours will fly by. Definitely one for the archives.
