Of the myriad Irish debuts that we’ve been itching to wrap our ears around in 2019, the self-titled first album from Dundalk’s Larry must surely rank up with the most eagerly-anticipated Comprising guitarist and vocalist Joey Edwards, bassist Aoife Ward and drummer David Noonan, also of Just Mustard, the band opted record with none other than Steve Albini at Chicago’s Electrical Audio last September. The result is a nine-track release that not only bears the imprint of indie rock trailblazers Sparklehorse, Wilco, Courtney Barnett and Pixies: it’s a record that finds Larry, assured and inspired, carving out special territory within the…

You may have caught wind: we’re very excited for the release of the forthcoming self-titled debut album from Dundalk three-piece Larry. Set for release via Pizza Pizza Records on April 26, the nine-track release was recorded by none other than Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, and mastered by the one – the only – Bob Weston. A track we called a “fervent, four-minute paean to freedom and psychic wanderlust” lead single ‘Cocker Spaniel’ packed a big punch. ‘Liar’ goes one further. Capturing the band’s increasingly distinctive and implosive push-and-pull, its skeletal dynamics brilliantly mirror frontman Joey Edwards’ confessionalism. Have a first listen to…

In the latest of a new regular series, Colin Gannon rounds up the very best Irish tracks released of the month just gone, featuring ELLLL, Mob Wife, Fehdah, Larry, Sunken Foal, Soulé, Postcard Versions and more. ELLLL — Pepsi Ellen King’s work as ELLLL is fast becoming one of the most searingly vital things in Irish music. As well as being super busy (she’s released two equally erudite EPs in the space of two months), King has managed to keep the quality to an almost peerless quality. The latest batch of tracks, Confectionary, all named after a sweet shop delicacy,…

As you may have recently noticed, we’re firmly of the opinion that Dundalk lo-fi alt-rock trio Larry are going places in 2019 and beyond. The first single from the band’s forthcoming, Steve Albini-produced (and Bob Weston-mastered) debut album, ‘Cocker Spaniel’ could not sum up our collective conviction more. Accompanied by a wonderful video, featuring pro-quality camera work from an actual cocker spaniel, called Jesse, it’s a fervent, four-minute paean to freedom and psychic wanderlust. Have a first look and listen below. Larry’s debut album will be released via Pizza Pizza records on April 26th. ‘Cocker Spaniel’ is officially out tomorrow.

We continue 19 for ‘19 – our feature looking at nineteen Irish acts that we’re convinced are going places in 2019 – with Dundalk lo-fi alt-rock three-piece Larry. Photo by Aaron Corr When you record an album with Steve Albini (Shellac/Rapeman /Big Black) you get a certain amount of bang for your buck – you get a solid ranking of all the vegetarian restaurants in Chicago. You get recommendations for who best to master your album, i.e. Bob Weston (Shellac). You get to see your music mixed, not only by a master engineer, but also by a World Series of…

Made up of Joey Edwards, Aoife Ward and David Noonan, Dundalk three-piece Larry knocked our hungover, quietly contemplative socks off at Arcadian Field festival earlier this month. Filtering the imprint of the likes of Ryan Adams, Pixies and Wilco, the threesome’s brand of lo-fi alt-rock brims with burrowing pop sensibility and wonderfully-wielded lyrical pathos courtesy of frontman Edwards. Ahead of recording their debut album in Electrical Audio, Chicago with our Lord and Saviour, Steve Albini this September (keep your eyes peeled for a 12″ vinyl via Pizza Pizza Records) we’re pleased to present a first look at the video for the band’s new single ‘WAH’. Like the song – and…
