It’s been almost a year to the day since Girl Band played the Roisín Dubh. At that point the band had just released their seminal single ‘De Bom Bom’ and plans for an album were in a mere germination stage, the only thing that they knew for certain was that they would record it themselves and that it would be out in 2015. This being less than a week after the release of the massively anticipated LP Holding Hands With Jamie then, excitement levels are through the roof to see how the year has impacted the most innovative and exhilarating…

The great people of the Co-Present on Radiomade.ie have, in one year and nine months of broadcasting, had some of the finest Irish acts come in and record live sessions with the team’s wingman Gav Hennessy. So, in an immeasurable act of kindness, they’ve made available each one of the 168 tracks recorded from various live sessions, available on Clowdy. As well as that, presenter Dwayne Woods has announced that this Friday’s show will be the final weekday show before a move to the more accessible 3-5pm slot on Saturday afternoon. To celebrate this, they’ve organised three days of awesome Irish music…

The b-side to his earworming ‘Austria’ single, ‘Camaraderie‘ by Dublin singer-songwriter Padda Hanna is a decidedly more reflective, inward-looking affair, touching upon Hanna’s struggles with intense depression. A swooning, Americana-tinged jangle-pop evoking the likes of Pedro The Lion and self-titled-era Elliott Smith, the track is accompanied by a touching, equally static and stoic video by Luke Byrne. Speaking of the track, Hanna said, “Last summer I was crippled with depression, to the point where I was physically and mentally too sick to stand. I spent many weeks alone in my cottage growing ever more paranoid of the outside world and the joyful cheers…

Kicking things off nicely is Paddy Hanna with his introspective, delicate folk. His greatest, and most striking strength is his voice, reminiscent of BBC’s Jack Steadman, Alt-J’s Joe Newman and even our own Conor O’Brien. His mellow, gossamer guitar playing may be lost on the early crowd who are yet to break from their tight circles and shadowy corners. But in Paddy, though no stage master, there’s clearly something to like for lovers of the genre. The crowd begins to grow. Mid week gigs are all the thing it seems. But then again, who wouldn’t want to get out of…

In this installment of Track Record, we poke around the house of Paddy Hanna in search of his favourite records. Photos by Brian Mulligan. Kevin Devine and The Goddam Band – Bubblegum I played a show with this dude at the Roisin Dubh in Galway, following the performance he and I went back to the apartment which is provided for the bands. We spoke for about three or so hours, I drank ice cold Zaconey left in the freezer by the previous nights band while he enjoyed herbal tea and a packet of cheese and onion hunky dory. after another ill…

Just over a year on from released the exquisite Leafy Stiletto – one of our Irish albums of 2014 no less – Dublin’s Paddy Hanna has returned in something of a new guise with ‘Austria’, a jangle-pop mini-masterstroke evoking the likes of Morrissey, The Divine Comedy and Elvis Costello. There’s also a vague hint of Joe Dolan in there too but we’ll pretend we didn’t hear that. Or will we? Anyway, we’re very fond of ‘Austria’ and wouldn’t even remotely kick up a fuss if Hanna deciding to dander down this sonic path for an eon and an age. Paired with a b-side,…

“That’s a great song… but who is it about?” I’m sure at some stage you’ve scratched your head pondering over just who your favourite Irish bands named certain songs after. Well, you’re in for a treat! The Thin Air have gone straight to the sources and asked ‘who the hell is that?’ so you don’t have to. You may or may not recognize some of the people above, but we can assure you that’s these faces were inspiring enough to have a song penned especially about them. We’ve also compiled a Spotify playlist of our ten favourite songs about these…
