Among the many tributes pouring in for Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, who has tragically passed aged 52 from coronavirus, Roy Duffy of Dublin indie-rock threesome par excellence Squarehead has offered up something special. Recorded in memory of Schlesinger, Duffy’s rendition of Fountain of Wayne’s debut single, ‘Radiation Vibe,’ feels like the sonic equivalent of a perfectly drawn-out embrace with someone you thought you’d never see again. “I came late to the realisation that I was a big fan of Adam Schlesinger’s work,’ Duffy said. “Maybe about 10 years ago when I began writing my own “song songs” in earnest I delved into anything that…

It’s odd that so many of Ireland’s best and much missed bands have chosen the exact same time to make a comeback. Girl Band’s triumphant return four years after their debut and two years after their last live appearance may be the most notable, but forthcoming third albums from early 2010s Richter Collective stalwarts BATS and Jogging should be just as vital. Squarehead, meanwhile, don’t feel like they’ve ever really been away. Live shows have continued sporadically and new singles have slowly slipped out over the past two years, but it’s been a whole six since the band’s last full…

Hands down one of the country’s very best indie bands, Squarehead have announced details of their long-awaited new album. Six years on from the release of the stellar Respect, Roy Duffy, Ian McFarlane and Ruan Van Vliet will release the aptly-tiled High Time via Strange Brew Records on September 27th. Produced, once again, by Lesley Keye, the album – which is said to reflect the personal growth of the band over the last few years – also features keyboardist Ruadhan O’Meara of Magic Pockets and No Spill Blood. As well as the album’s artwork and tracklisting, stream new single, the…

Strange, desperate times call for great, defiant music. Fighting their corner, and sounding the best they have ever sounded, is the re-emergent Squarehead. Comprising Roy Duffy, Ruan Van Vliet and Ian McFarlane, the Dublin indie-rock heroes are back after a lengthy, self-proclaimed “mental-health break” (always a good shout, busy artists) with a brand new album in the can. Featuring sometime fourth member, Ruadhan O’Meara (No Spill Blood/Magic Pockets) on keyboards and synth duties, lead single, the sublime ‘Always On’ sees “the boys now men with crippling responsibilities and a feeling of bewilderment at the world around them.” It’s quintessential Squarehead and a latecomer for one of the Irish singles…

Frankie Cosmos’s Greta Kline is an artist who oozes cool credibility. A startlingly talented songwriter with a steadfastly DIY ethos, the native New Yorker began garnering acclaim for her music when she was still just a teenager, using Bandcamp to release a veritable avalanche of bedroom pop gems in just a few short years. Now signed with Sub Pop records and touring off the back of Frankie Cosmos’ third full length album, this evening’s show in Voodoo promises to showcase Kline’s wry poeticism and Lo-Fi yet sophisticated take on the indie pop genre. First sightings of Kline in Voodoo’s bar…
