• Frame By Frame #002: September Girls – Green Eyed

Following on from a feature on the making of Cliff Richard by Abandcalledboy, Belfast-based photographer and filmmaker and Colm Laverty chats to Jessie from Dublin noise pop band September Girls about her brilliant and thoroughly DIY video for the band’s recent single, ‘Green Eyed’. First off, tell us a little bit about each of your roles on this music video. I’m Jessie and I play the red guitar in the band… and I also directed this video! In a sentence, what sets ‘Green Eyed’ apart from other Irish music videos? It was a very DIY affair, made by the band,…

  • Watch: Villagers – Occupy Your Mind

“In the advent of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, please find attached a song written for you, your mother, your father and your gay brothers and sisters in Russia.” So reads a Facebook post by Dublin band Villagers, words that accompany the video to their Muse-esque new single, ‘Occupy Your Mind.’ Directed by Alden Volney, the video features the band’s main man Conor O’Brien sat on a theatre stage as luminous, scattered lights beamed onto his face, a faceless captor of sorts overseeing proceedings in the distance. Debuted on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show last night, the single follows on from…

  • Watch: Feet For Wings – Cathedral St.

For one reason or another, the sea seems to occupy a special place in the hearts of many acts trying to visually capture the essence of their sound or  lyrical content. Take, for example, ‘Holy‘ by Scottish band Frightened Rabbit or ‘Can’t Make You Come Back‘ by Derry’s Our Krypton Son – just two songs that are not only complimented by their accompanying, nautically-inclined videos, but wonderfully transformed by the simple poetic majesty of the ocean. Adding themselves to such esteemable company is Belfast-based alt-acoustic four-piece Feet For Wings, a band whose short film-like video for their new single, ‘Cathedral St’,…

  • Watch: The Rupture Dogs – Before The Flood

Having launched it at Belfast’s Stiff Kitten on Friday night, Belfast-based alt-rock band The Rupture Dogs have released the video to their new single, ‘Before The Flood’. Film, directed and edited by Ryan Douglas, the video features the four-piece performing the track with typical intent, culminating in a suitably seismic final fifteen seconds not entirely unlike the band’s live show. ‘Before The Flood’ is taken from the band’s twelve-track debut album, Feral. Stream that here. Watch the video for ‘Before The Flood’ below.

  • Watch: Two Glass Eyes – Mend

Northern Irish alt-rock trio Two Glass Eyes have unveiled the DIY video to their new single, ‘Mend’. Shot and edited by the band’s drummer Mark Easton (of TinyBird Media), the video was shot on zero budget, the band aiming for a “feel-good tour/studio video”. Two Glass Eyes are currently booking their European tour for later in the year. They also officially launch ‘Mend’ at Belfast’s Voodoo on Thursday, February 6, with Past Victories, Dog Will Hunt and Abandcalledboy. Go here for the show’s event page. Watch the video for ‘Mend’ below.

  • Watch: The Mighty Stef – Nightwatchman of the Iveagh Flats

Bearing the influence of its producer, Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures) Dublin rock band The Mighty Stef have released the video to their masterfully moody new single, ‘Nightwatchman of the Iveagh Flats’. Propelled by frontman Stefan Murphy’s gruff vocal tones – think Mark Lanegan via Nick Cave, Ian McCulloch and (good) Bono – the song is set for a worldwide digital release on February 14. Reflecting the band’s passion for horror movies and culture, the video was shot at various locations around Dublin City in January and is “the tale of a local rock band who incur the wrath…

  • Video Exclusive: Abandcalledboy – Cliff Richard

Having watched it at least five times revelling in its unmitigated majesty, we’re happy to give you an exclusive first look of the wonderfully retro and decidedly rad video for ‘Cliff Richard’ by Northern Irish alt-rock three-piece Abandcalledboy. “We made it ourselves,” said the band’s drummer and vocalist, Ryan Burrowes. “We basically watched a load of Cliff Richard videos and attempted to re-create our own twisted version with a grand budget of £0.” “We made the costumes ourselves, came up with loads of ideas and then with our friend Odhrain, went and shot it all on what felt like the coldest day ever. It’s…

  • Watch: VerseChorusVerse – No More Years

Having been busy planning the release of his eagerly anticipated solo album, Belfast-based singer-songwriter Tony Wright AKA VerseChorusVerse has unveiled the video to his new single, ‘No More Years’. The second track on the forthcoming release, Wright said “The video is a blatant metaphor and also a slight poke/twist at all those singer-songwriter videos that appear to be shot in the woods. I, myself, have been guilty of this too. A fine tradition started by Bryan Adams with that Robin Hood tune, with sci-fi references in there to satisfy my inner and outer nerd.” Wright’s debut album will be released…

  • Watch: September Girls – Green Eyed

One of the highlights from their recently-recently debut album, Cursing The Sea, Dublin noise-pop band September Girls have unveiled the video for their new single, ‘Green Eyed’. The track – inspired by the call-and-response vocal style of Look In My Diary by Reparata and the dreams – the song is about being in a relationship with someone who is untrustworthy, and feeling trapped. Win tickets to see September Girls in Belfast’s Menagerie Bar on Saturday, September 1 here. Watch the video – directed by the band’s guitarist, Jessie Ward, and shot in an evening in September Girls’ basement rehearsal space…

  • Watch: Fox Jaw – Kerosene

Coinciding with downsizing their name from Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters, Limerick band Fox Jaw have unveiled the video to their punchy new single, ‘Kerosene’. Released on February 28, the single – taken from the five-piece’s forthcoming album, Ghost’s Parade – is propelled by a strutting alt-rock groove and raspy vocal delivery that combine to excavate wonderfully malevolent undercurrents. Watch the video – directed by Shane Serrano from the band – below.
