• Ten Past Seven & Shifting at Bello Bar

On Saturday, 5th March, Dublin’s Bello Bar hosts one truly righteous double-bill: Kerry instrumental trio Ten Past Seven with Dublin noise-rock levellers Shifting. After myriad months of being unable to do so, both bands will largely perform music from two of the best released on these shores in 2020: Long Live The Bogwalrus and It Was Good respectively. Limited numbers of vinyl will also be on sale on the night. Tickets are €10 on the door and available here. Newcomer? Not to worry. Check out two new live videos of both bands performing – live in Rory from TP7’s shed no less – below.…

  • The Thin Air’s Top 50 Irish Releases of 2020

In years to come, when someone asks me what The Thin Air was and represented, I’ll likely direct them to features like the one you have just opened. Much like other publications of our ilk – Nialler9, The Last Mixed Tape, Goldenplec and others – we spend 52 weeks of the year relentlessly championing what truly makes Irish music special and, very occasionally, genuinely world-beating. We all do it in different ways, and to slightly different audiences, but the impetus and desire to shine a light on what we have is one and the very same. Although they’re almost never…

  • Premiere: Ten Past Seven – Turf War

Since 2002, Kerry trio Ten Past Seven have peddled a singular brand of instrumentalism, striking an equal parts nuanced and face-melting midpoint between alternative, math rock and self-proclaimed “bog prog”. On November 27th, the band – comprising Rory O’Brien on guitar, Matt Shallow on bass and drummer Ger Mangan – will release their second full-length LP, Long Live the Bogwalrus, via pre-eminent Irish indie imprint Art for Blind Records. Recorded by two-thirds of TTA favourites Percolator, John “Spud” Murphy and Ian Chestnutt, at Guerilla Studios in Dublin, the album features guest vocals by Landless, fiddle by Lankum’s Cormac MacDiarmada and various other notable guest…

  • A4 Sounds Presents: Ten Past Seven & Aonghus McEvoy Trio

Sometimes-slinking, sometimes-monolithic, always-dynamic Kerry instrumental trio Ten Past Seven play their first Dublin headline show in a number of years with a performance at gig & art space A4 Sounds this Saturday, October 12. They’ve just recorded their new album at Dublin’s Guerrilla Studios, set for release in 2010, ten years after their last album, Bothar Buí, which featured an appearance from Katie Kim, and remixes by Kevin Blake, Toby Kaar, Molotov Ape & Laura Sheeran. Sharing the bill is Woven Skull member, composer & guitar explorer Aonghus McEvoy‘s trio. Expect hypnotic, deconstructed music rooted in blues, jazz, and the underbelly of primitivism. Have a listen to his work on…

  • Watch: Underline 1 ft. Ten Past Seven, Turning Down Sex & Crowhammer

Underline is a brand new series of live performances brought to you by the makers of our favourite video this year and exquisitely shot under a railway line in North Dublin, hence the title. Part one features the likes of Ten Past Seven, Turning Down Sex and Crowhammer. Here’s what Sean Zissou had to say about it: ‘Underline was shot in the cavernous Guerrilla Studios, under a railway line in North Strand. The studio itself is run by John ‘Spud’ Murphy and he’s been recording several Irish acts there over the past couple of years. The recent Hands Up Who Wants to Die…
