• Iceage – Beyondless

“Beyondless is the 4th LP from Iceage. This record radiates joy.” So claims Daniel Stewart, frontman of fellow post punk outfit Total Control, in Matador’s press release for the new Iceage record. As one would imagine from an album that owes it’s name to Samuel Beckett, this isn’t exactly true: frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt still snarls his way through tales of heartbreak, war and suicide, with a lurking, gothic menace underlying the band’s attack. They have, however, embraced a fuller and more emphatic sound, bringing in horns and further exploring the Americana elements of 2014’s Plowing Into The Field OF…

  • Privacy, Freedom, Bliss and Breadth: An Interview with Hilary Woods

Dublin native Hilary Woods found herself thrust into the public eye while still just a teenager, playing bass in the commercially successful alternative trio JJ72. Her tenure with the band saw her tour the world, grace the covers of music magazines and even appear on Top of the Pops. After two albums though Woods parted ways with her bandmates, ready to follow her own creative voice. The road to launching herself as a solo artist may have been a winding one but since 2013 fans have been treated to three darkly dreamlike releases showcasing Woods’ delicate voice and deft song…

  • PhotoIreland Festival Launch

Laia Abril – On Abortion Today sees the launch of this year’s PhotoIreland Festival, with a number of events in and around Dublin to mark the occassion. The month long festival coincides with the Eighth Amendment referendum on May 25th, and this huge societal and political debate is refreshingly not absent from either the content or structure of the festival. For PhotoIreland’s duration the main hub of the foundation, The Library Project, will be taken over by the Together for Yes campaign. With this year’s main exhibitions including Laia Abril’s On Abortion and Sarah Cullen’s You Shall Have Exactly What You…

  • Ulrika Spacek – Suggestive Listening EP

For most bands, the EP format proves a useful starting point, a way of getting their earliest tracks out there when not in possession of enough money, time or material for a full LP, while also functioning as a low stakes release while they find their feet, not yet ready to commit to that ultimate statement of “the album”. Others though, like Ulrika Spacek, arrived so fully formed that work on an album was the first port of call, and indeed their 2016 debut release The Album Paranoia is still their strongest work to date. After last year’s quick follow…

  • Video Premiere: Jimmy Penguin x Post Punk Podge – Synthesize Our Faith

Jimmy Penguin is a prolific producer & founder of Galway’s Community Skratch collective. Limerick-based Post Punk Podge is one of Ireland’s increasingly infamous vitriolic, satirical, and fast-rising hip-hop artists. ‘Synthesize Our Faith’ is taken from Penguin’s new collaborative EP, Savages – which features guests across the world of turntablism including Chilean Redmist – who cut much of the EP – and Dublin’s DJ Crutch, who co-authored the beats. Besides Podge, appearances come from Djackulate, Clockwork, Krayb, Hadoshrooms. ctlFSH also uses a unique filter scratch technique on the record, which involves “using a fader for filter instead of the on-off. He’s been practising it for years and…
