Féile Na Gréine is back, and the 2024 edition promises to be its most ambitious yet.
Running from August 23rd to 25th, this annual, volunteer-run festival will take audiences on a three-day musical trail through the music capital of Ireland, Limerick City, stopping at an array of venues – from art spaces and underground clubs to craft breweries and street parties. It’s there we’re certain it will underscore its status as a supremely curated expression of Ireland’s world-beating DIY community.
This year’s perfectly pitched line-up includes TTA favourites The Bonk, known for their song and freeform jazz improvisation led by Phil Christie; the return of one of the island’s very best indie rock acts Silverbacks; the fiddle and voice folk duo Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin & Ultan O’Brien; and the psychogeography-inspired Trá Pháidín, hopping straight off the 424.
With over 30 scheduled events across 9 venues, this year’s outing is sure to be a celebration of everything DIY in our island’s independent music. Launching the festival online with a special BYOL performance is mysterious Irish supergroup Prin€ess. The performance will be recorded in Lumen Street Theatre’s residence at the old corn store warehouse on Roches Street, adding a unique touch to the festival’s kickoff.
The Treaty City Brewery will keep the party going all weekend with vinyl-only DJ sets from Elaine Howley, also of Altered Hours, the legendary mynameisjohn of Rusangano Family fame, festival favourite Emmy Shigeta, and more.
In a new collaboration, STARLING, an emerging DIY artist space, will host a corresponding performance program at the project space, 31 Nicholas Street, featuring performances by four artists whose work spans visual art, experimental sound, music, writing, and movement. Elsewhere, Belfast experimental rock masters Blue Whale return to the city and Ormston House will play host to vocal quartet Landless, offering their dark and rich interpretations of centuries-old ballads as well as more recently-penned folk songs.
And so, so much more besides.
