Make a work that you would make if you were the only person in the world. Don’t worry about pleasing others. A true work will find the people who need it, always, and they will be the people you need to. Trying to please with your work will bring the wrong people to you. Take up space with your work. Use your voice, your unique identity. Stand strong and tall on your own two feet. Shake your body. Feel the vibrations of your song and art. Let it energize and motivate you. Love your thoughts and words. They belong to…

Katie and Aoife of Alien She interview each other and delve deep on the topics closest to their hearts for International Women’s Day. Photos by Sarah Ryan and art by Katie O’Neill. Why do you make art? Aoife: I need to express myself or I’ll explode. Expression is the opposite of depression. It’s something I find comfort in, and maybe other people will find comfort in what I create. Katie: It’s a deep impulse. It helps me express myself in a way that I find very challenging to do verbally. I figure my life and my feelings out by making…

Released as part of the Art For Blind-supported Goodbye 8 Campaign, ‘Death Sentence’ by Dublin experimental trio Alien She is a track that confronts the crux of the Irish abortion rights debate head on. The closing track on the band’s debut album, Feeler, the band wrote the song after Savita Halappanavar, originally from India, died at University Hospital Galway in 2012 due to complications arising from a septic miscarriage and failings in her care. Accompanying a Bandcamp release – which includes a tote bag/print, proceeds of which go to Repealing the 8th – the release comes accompanied with a video courtesy…

Dublin’s Alien She have been dazzling us with their snappy, experimental art-punk since the start, and have lifted the cloche on their much-anticipated debut LP, Feeler, released through Sligo DIY distro, Art For Blind Records (Altered Hours, Wild Rocket, I Am The Cosmos). Musically, the trio play a blend of agit. punk, shoegaze and alt. pop, tied together with an in-the-moment sense of experimentalism and febrile live energy, giving weight to Alien She’s politically & socially conscious impulse. The artistic inclination of founding members Katie & Aoife, both of whom are heavily Dublin’s art & poetry community in Dublin, first came together at a feminist meeting, and having spent the last two…

Bearing the sonic imprint of everyone from Patti Smith and Sonic Youth to Joy Division and The Cure, ‘Solitary’ by Dublin three-piece Alien She is hands down their strongest and most compelling single effort to date. Set to feature on their forthcoming debut album Feeler – which is set for release via the excellent Art For Blind in the Autumn – it’s a spectral, solipsistic affair, whose lo-fi tone and tangents marry nicely with the track’s accompanying visuals. Edited by the band’s guitarist/vocalist Katie O’Neill, check out the video below. Revisit our 17 For ’17 piece with the band here. Check out our…

While 2016 has proved a political and problematic wreck in many regards, Dublin trio Alien She have made the most of it, using the ups and (mostly) downs of the past twelve months to fuel their experimental and progressive sound. While the group has been floating around the Dublin music scene for the last number of years, 2016 proved to be a particularly productive year. Besides their active gigging schedule, the latter half of last year brought the release of the track ‘Cold Brain’ from their debut album Feeler, soon to be released. The group comprises of artists and activists…
