ELLLL — Pepsi Ellen King’s work as ELLLL is fast becoming one of the most searingly vital things in Irish music. Problem Patterns — Allegedly In a month where the R&B musician R. Kelly—after painfully long years of swerving accountability for persistent, unsettling claims of heinous abuses—may finally have his day of reckoning in a court, new Belfast-based feminist punk group Problem Patterns’ snarling debut single, ‘Allegedly’, lands a certain potency. • Countersunk share video for 101 Beats Per Minute track, ‘I Only Have Eyes’

From August 2018 right up to the end of the year, Dublin experimental label, Countersunk, has been sharing a track a week as part of its 101 Beats Per Minute project. Featuring contributions from a wide range of Irish musicians and producers, each track in the collection is as distinct as the next, with the only brief given being that it had to be 101 bpm. The tracks themselves have been released anonymously, but among the contributors are the likes of Jape, ELLLL, Margie Jean Lewis, Somadrone and Countersunk’s own Sunken Foals AKA Dunk Murphy. The anonymity of each of the release’s…

  • 17 for ’17: ELLLL

Ellen King AKA ELLLL is a Cork City native who started a music degree with a background in classical piano. When the opportunity arose she immersed herself in every available course on tech and minimal composition, and around 2011 she started performing as ELLLL. She was soon supporting acts like Bee Mask, Vessel and Tim Hecker in venues across Ireland, as well as travelling abroad to support Carter Tutti Void in London. A slow but steady stream of cuts on SoundCloud have become gradually less abstract and more beat-focused, retaining the singular character that’s driven her approach over recent years. A…

Art for Blind doesn’t…

  • Texture and Physicality with ELLLL

Having featuring as an Inbound act in the second issue of our magazine, Cork-based producer Ellen King AKA ELLLL has well and truly kicked into gear with recent release ‘Romance’, a self-professed “beat-driven collage with a playful and sinister narrative”. Touching on her creative process, Irish electronic music and what the future holds, King talks to fellow Cork native Mike McGrath Bryan. Photos by Louise Adelaide McKeown. How did ELLLL start? Where does Ellen King end and ELLLL begin? I had been writing some music as an undergrad and was approached to play live. I needed a name. So, that’s how it came…
