“That’s a great song… but who is it about?” I’m sure at some stage you’ve scratched your head pondering over just who your favourite Irish bands named certain songs after. Well, you’re in for a treat! The Thin Air have gone straight to the sources and asked ‘who the hell is that?’ so you don’t have to. You may or may not recognize some of the people above, but we can assure you that’s these faces were inspiring enough to have a song penned especially about them. We’ve also compiled a Spotify playlist of our ten favourite songs about these…

Dublin noise rock quartet Girl Band have been very active as of late. As well as having the slightly daunting honour of supporting both Metz and Slint on recent tours, they also been on the road on the their own right, as well as delivering nothing short of an unforgettable performance on the Friday night of Electric Picnic. The latest milestone on their altogether upward journey is the release of ‘De Bom Bom’, a single that perfectly embodies the manic fury and almost touchable neurotic majesty of their current material. The accompanying video, created by Second Frame Films, mirrors the aforementioned…

With a sickeningly diverse lineup of local and international acts, both old and new, spanning more or less every genre under the glistening sun, Electric Picnic 2014 is the hottest ticket of the Irish summer, and upon exploration of the festival site (it would be unjust to ignore Electric Picnic’s attention to detail) there’s the essential Body & Soul zone, functioning as the hippie commune area of the site – the music and arts festival is, after all, the bedrock of the hippie dream – and the Trailer Park, which offers corn dogs, some cover bands and an assortment of…

Louisville post-rock legends Slint made their long-awaited Belfast debut on Monday night, supported by fast-rising Dublin noise rock quartet Girl Band. Check out Joe Laverty’s photos from the night below.

It’s somewhat of a dow-time for gigs these days, with Electric Picnic looming in just a few weeks, it seems that the smaller shows have dried up just a little bit. That’s not to say that there are not numerous shows taking place right across around the country this week, and we’ve picked out a few that are most definitely worth checking out. Slint, Girl Band – Limelight 2, Belfast; Monday, August 18 Louisville post-rock pioneers Slint make their Belfast debut on Monday, August 18 at Limelight 2. Hands down one of the most influential bands of all time, they will…

Having inveigled with their seven-minute debut single, ‘Lawman’, back in January, Dublin noise rock quartet Girl Band have unveiled its equally inexorable successor, ‘De Bom Bom’. A potent and propulsive effort – positively not created with the airwaves in mind – it is wonderfully severe, spleen-stretching throwdown, clouded in fuzz and driven by a rabid, demented rhythm. Accompanied by a cover of Beat Happening’s ‘I Love You’, the track will see a limited edition 500-run 7-inch, released via Any Other City. With a string of dates with Metz and Slint on the horizon, Girl Band will support the latter pioneers at Belfast’s…

Quite possibly the shortest track released for this year’s Record Store Day, Dublin four-piece Girl Band have made the brilliantly abrasive burst of noise rock that is ‘The Cha Cha Cha’ available to download for free. Once again evoking the likes of early Pixies and Mclusky/Future of the Left, the twenty-five second track is a fairly accurate summation of the band’s back catalogue to date: frantic, frenetic, breathless and gloriously pulverising in equal proportion. Our only complaint? You guessed it – it’s just that little bit too short. All said and done, we think you should listen to this. So do,…

We launch of brand new gig/club night NO TOMORROW at Voodoo Belfast this Saturday, March 1. Headlining on the night is fast-rising Dublin noise rock quartet Girl Band (above), an act whose ferocious latest single ‘Lawman’ seduced Pitchfork, The Quietus and many others aside. Support on the night comes in the form of hugely promising Belfast/Dublin garage quartet CRUISING and a DJ set from the one and only Not Squares. The Thin Air DJs will also be delivering an abundance of tunes throughout the night. A plenitude of awesome visuals will also be on display on the night, the first…

Dublin-based quartet Girl Band have made a hell of a lot of noise in a short space of time. From last year’s gloriously curdling racket of a Blawan cover, ‘Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage’, the band have been riding on a fresh wave of attention which has not only rekindled interest in their 2012 EP, France 98, but has also created something of a hypestorm around their latest single, ‘Lawman’. What’s particularly refreshing is that said hype seems to be justified – the aforementioned single is a six-minute beast of a thing; all dread-inducing basslines and frenetic percussion.…
