• F I V E R T H O N @ A4 Sounds

A4 Sounds need your help and more importantly they need your fivers! The interdisciplinary artist studio and gallery organisation provide affordable access to studio spaces, artist facilities as well as running workshops and courses. In recent years these spaces have been disappearing from the Dublin creative scene and their presence is vital for the community. Recently A4 sounds was awarded a 10 year lease, securing their long term future. Along with this lease they also secured funding to carry out vital refurbishment to the space. To complete this work (which is for refurbishment to the the electrical system, to install a fire alarm system, and…

  • Exhibition: This Was Our Scene @ Fumbally Exchange

Tonight’s sees the opening of a new photographic exhibition in Dublin’s Fumbally Exchange featuring the work of Gregory Nolan. Originally from Ireland, Nolan cut his teeth abroad rather than at home – making a name for himself through his blend of traditional music photography coupled with a documentary style to capture the London’s mid-2000’s indie scene, a fact reference in the exhibition’s title: This Was Our Scene. Nolan’s imagery captured the energy of the capital’s music scene, and encapsulated the hedonism and excitement emanating from his adopted hometown. When viewing his photographs of now established names like The Libertines and Frank Turner it is clear that the heartbeat of this resurgence were…

  • IN CONTEXT 4: Work Songs

Visual Artist Fiona Dowling and Composer George Higgs are currently seeking five South County Dublin business to part-take in their project Work Songs. The project sees the pair look to create a musical portrait of South County Dublin’s economic profile. The initiative is part of the wider IN CONTEXT 4: In Our Time programme which is part of the South Dublin County Council’s Public Art Programme for 2016-2019. The tradition of work place songs is a long and rooted one, but this practice has wained in recent years. Work Songs  is very much viewed as a collaborative effort with Dowling and Higgs consulting the…

  • Track Record: Gavin Glass

In this installment of Track Record, we head over to the lovely home of Gavin Glass to have a rummage around his eclectic record collection (and a nosey at his collection of guitars too!) Elvis Presley – Aloha, From Hawaii I have to put one in from The King of Rock N’Roll. I’ve been a huge Elvis fan since I was really young.  I used to constantly draw pictures of Elvis on primary school books. This album was recorded live as part of a satellite broadcast which was one of the first live concerts broadcast live worldwide. Elvis’ TCB band…

  • Track Record: Nialler9

Niall Byrne AKA Nialler9 selects and talks about some of his all-time favourite records, including The Redneck Manifesto, J Dilla, Ships and Kraftwerk. Photos by Mark Earley. The Redneck Manifesto – First Three Album package I found this at the Dublin Flea Market one Sunday in Newmarket Square which is just around the corner from my house. The Rednecks were among the first independent Irish bands I got into so it was nice to get this. Fun fact, Lisa Hannigan called me a bollocks because I bought it before she did. Beastie Boys – Ill Communication I first discovered the Beastie…

  • Stream: PØRTS – Ancient Wave

In a rather unexpected nominal curveball, fast-rising Derry quartet Little Bear have changed their name to PØRTS (monosyllabism, capitalisation and obscurism is in, after all) as well as releasing a new track,  ‘Ancient Wave’. Bearing a distinctly more fleshed-out sound than previously heard, the song retain the band’s building, anthemic shtick whilst hinting at treading new ground in terms of ambience and soundscaping in new material. Stream the track via YouTube below.

  • Stream: We Cut Corners – YKK

Taken from their forthcoming second album – set for release at some point next year – Dublin indie-rock duo We Cut Corners have unveiled their excellent new single, ‘YKK’. Set for release via Delphi on November 25, the short track is a simple but characteristically infectious little slice of the two-piece’s craft. To coincide with the release – the band’s first single in over a year – We Cut Corners are set to play four dates over the next while: Thursday, October 17: CMJ showcase, Fat Baby, Rivington St, NYC Friday, October 18: The Planetary/The Great Escape Party @ CMJ, Pianos, Ludlow…
