• Watch: Bouts – Passing Through

    Not that you need reminding, but Dublin indie quartet Bouts released one of the Irish albums of the year (thus far) back in January. Released today, the fourth single to be taken from Flow is ‘Passing Through’ and what a timely, sun-drenched cut it is. Bounding with starry-eyed hooks, it’s a brisk but brilliant effort that faces down “the transience of life – friendship, music and attachment.” Move over ‘Get Lucky’ – this is the sound of the (Irish) summer.     One of the finest cuts from last year’s A Litany of Failures Vol. II independent compilation was Shrug Life‘s ‘2009’, a misleadingly uptempo ditty that mined reprieve from the jowls of self-imposed doom.   • What’s the story with Galway’s busking bye-laws?

    At a Galway City Council meeting this past January it was announced that the controversial Street Performance & Busking Bye-laws needed to be returned to the draft stage. This is despite being passed last May (albeit a 9-9 tie in which then-Mayor, Pearce Flannery, had the casting vote). The reason the process had to be restarted was due to an error with the commencement date on the draft. Councillor Mike Cubbard has been out-spoken against the introduction of these bye-laws since the outset and expressed his concern at this new development, saying “we’re getting fobbed off”.
