• Gremlins @ QFT Belfast

    Belfast’s Queen’s Film Theatre will host a special one-off screening of Joe Dante’s classic 1984 horror comedy blockbuster Gremlins on Saturday, December 14. Presented by BBC Radio Ulster broadcaster Ralph McClean the screening is one of a select handful of Christmas movies being shown at the film theatre this year and will also include complimentary Jameson cocktails, music and prizes (including an original print by Peter Strain).   • Stream: Go Wolf – Voices/Even God

    Belfast indie pop band Go Wolf are streaming their latest single,’Voices’ and its b-side, ‘Even God’. Whereas ‘Voices’ was featured on the fifteenth compilation by French electronic label Kitsuné last month, the version of ‘Even God’ is a re-recorded version from the version released last year.     In the latest installment of Track Record, photographer Brid O’Donovan captures Chris Somers and Ruairi Dale from Cork-based dream-pop band Elastic Sleep choosing and talking about a selection of their favourite records – everything from Kate Bush to Steely Dan.     With its three day residency back in February still lingering fondly in the memory, it has been announced that Other Voices will return to Derry for another stint next year. Broadcast on RTÉ Two, the TV programme is world renown for featuring staging some of the finest and most intimate live musical performances and interviews from various Irish and international artists and musicians at its base in Dingle, Co.   • Watch: Jetplane Landing – Beat Generation… Ha!

    Taken from their fourth studio album, Don’t Try, Derry alt-rock quartet Jetplane Landing have unveiled the video to their forthcoming single, ‘Beat Generation… Ha!’ Referencing beat literature exponents such as Gregory Corso and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the video features cut-and-paste text from the likes of Corso’s poem ‘I am 25’, poetry works including A Coney Island Of The Mind by Ferlinghetti and press articles on the literary pioneers. ‘Beat Generation… Ha! is released on December 2nd via Smalltown America.   • Gig of the week: Shellac @ Limelight 2, Belfast

    Our gig of the week this week is a slight departure from our normal rule of thumb of featuring local artists. Fronted by  incomparably influential musician and legendary producer Steve Albini, Chicago, Illnois noise rock trio Shellac stop off at Belfast’s Limelight 2 on Thursday, November 21 ahead of the release of their forthcoming fifth studio album. The band will also play Dublin’s Whelan’s on Wednesday, November 20. Los Angeles-based cellist Alison Chesley AKA Helen Money will provide support on both dates.   • Stream: My Tribe Your Tribe – Vol. II EP

    Dublin-based singer-songwriter and producer George Mercer AKA My Tribe Your Tribe is streaming his second solo EP, the aptly-titled Vol. II. Formerly of Boy Lights Fire, Mercer released Vol. 1 back in April. Vol. II is mainly comprised of material written since the musician moved to Dublin from Laois in June.   • Watch: We Cut Corners – YKK

    Having released a stream of it last month, Dublin indie rock duo We Cut Corners have unveiled the Eoin Heaney-directed video for their new single, ‘YKK’. Filmed in black and white, the minimalist video features the pair performing the track in front of supremely seizure-inducing visuals from Dublin-based projection/visual artist collective LeTissier. ‘YKK’ is released via Delphi on November 25 and is set to feature on We Cut Corners’ second studio album, which will be released next year.     Restraint. A hard quality to achieve in one’s day to day life. Musically, however, it’s very difficult indeed. Amplified by speaker stacks and placed in the glare of spotlights, many bands affect emotion by stomping on a distortion pedal or guldering angst-ridden couplets. In stark contrast, the austere members of The National continually reign in such fits of childish pique.
