• Watch: Jape – The Heart’s Desire

What a feast for the senses ‘The Hearts Desire’ by Jape is. Aside from being an incredibly enjoyable slice of fidgety, cosmically-inclined electro-pop, its video – created by Conor Finnegan  – is the most visually satisfying, boundlessly colourful thing we’ve set our eyes on in quite some time. Dig the track? It will feature on Jape’s forthcoming fifth album, The Chemical Sea, which is set for release in January. Watch the video for ‘The Heart’s Desire’ below.

  • Watch: Squarehead – 2025

Equal parts wistful and wonderful, Dublin indie-rock trio Squarehead have unveiled the video for their latest single ‘2025’. Created by Domhnall and Brian Gleeson, the video very nicely captures perhaps the biggest of all the big questions: “Where does the time go?” It confronts it and turns it something of rare beauty – the faint sense of melancholy pales into a return to the “good old days”, and a very fun reminder of Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr’s age-old adage of “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose”. It also kind of reminded us of this. ‘2025’ is taken from Squarehead’s exceptional Respect, released last…

  • Stream: Crayonsmith – House Call

Albeit in demo form, ‘House Call’ by Dublin’s Crayonsmith is a lovely little slice of yearning indie-pop, hinting at some great things to come from the band. Culminating in an earworming closing refrain of “When you throw it all away” the track is propelled by its simple three-chord turn, lead guitar nuances and Ciaran Smith’s melancholic vocal delivery. Crayonsmith play Dublin’s Bello Bar this Saturday. Check out our Gigs of the Week here for more info.

  • Watch: Steve Strong – Contort/Retreat (Live)

Arriving in Ireland last night for a tour from the 12th to the 23rd, Plymouth-based one-man post-rock show Steve Strong heads for Cork this weekend, with Galway, Portrush and Dublin following next week, as part of his Agila November ’14 tour. The man is quite a sight to behold live, dextrously manipulating tones and textures with one hand while keeping a tight and tense percussion underneath with the other. From the tour blurb: Steve Strong is a one-man arsenal of beats, tapped guitar and lush, textural melodies. His music is as withheld as it is grandiose, as skeletal as it…

  • Listen: Kool Thing – I See You (I am You)

Kool Thing have cooled off in recent years to focus on various projects and relocate to Berlin so we’re delighted they’re back with a new single from their forthcoming second album which will be released early next year. We spoke to Julie Fogarty here for Inbound earlier in the year about her side project Under Tears, so here’s what she had to say about ‘I See You (I am You) : “I guess this song is about shedding ones past, getting rid of masks and starting again. It made sense for us to share this song first because it is a nice connection between where…

  • Watch: MAU – Original

Former Kidd Blunt and current Enemies guitarist Eoin Whitfield issues forth an earworm with his MAU project (fka Spread It Across the Sky) today through HeavyweightPR (seemingly stepping in on release as well as publicity). Featuring a vivid promo video by vibes.ie, and hooks aplenty, it’s a further step in a bold new direction for a man equally versed in heft and melody. Sez the press release: MAU is the new disguise for Wicklow based producer Eoin Whitfield. Eoin has been involved in the Irish music scene for over a decade, from heavily influential melodic hardcore band Kidd Blunt, to his current…

  • Watch: Tim Wheeler – Vigil

Over twenty years on from forming Ash, Tim Wheeler has unveiled the video for his debut single, ‘Vigil’. Taken from his forthcoming debut album, Lost Domain, the track deals with Wheeler coming to terms with the loss of his late father, George, to dementia. “It was a really hard time, it was a beautiful time as well, with the closeness of the family,” said Wheeler. We were glad that we all got to be there and share that time together.” Lost Domain is released on November 10. Wheeler will play the following dates over the next fortnight: November 4:  London, Bush Hall November…

  • Watch: Underline 1 ft. Ten Past Seven, Turning Down Sex & Crowhammer

Underline is a brand new series of live performances brought to you by the makers of our favourite video this year and exquisitely shot under a railway line in North Dublin, hence the title. Part one features the likes of Ten Past Seven, Turning Down Sex and Crowhammer. Here’s what Sean Zissou had to say about it: ‘Underline was shot in the cavernous Guerrilla Studios, under a railway line in North Strand. The studio itself is run by John ‘Spud’ Murphy and he’s been recording several Irish acts there over the past couple of years. The recent Hands Up Who Wants to Die…
