  • Listen: Jackie Beverly – Talk It Through

Here at TTA, we like our pop to be danced to with unselfconscious reckless abandon, and that’s why the second single from Dublin indietronic artist Jackie Beverly is our bag. As with previous single ‘Out of Reasons’, it’s club-ready as it is a nuanced, brooding study of human relationships that avoids the usual poptimistic pitfalls. Bolstered with nostalgia-charged synths and rich harmonies, thanks in no small part to the subtly buoyant production of Darragh Nolan & Joseph Panama. Of the song, Jackie “wanted to venture into the difficult aspects of loving someone, and tease out the idea that it’s possible to break through and recover something…

  • Album Premiere: Postcard Versions – Postcard Versions

Making good on the promise of last year’s debut single ‘Sunday Morning With Nate‘ – which came in at number 28 on our 2018 Irish Tracks of the Year and featured on independent compilation A Litany of Failures Volume II – Postcard Versions‘ debut album is here. Comfortably resigned and pragmatic in its optimism, Postcard Versions looks at a hungover languor as a chance for reprieve. Its 10 tracks never outstay their welcome, clocking in at just short of half an hour, making this another essential breezy indie rock album to add to Dublin canon alongside Popical Island, Tandem Felix & company – and it’s arguably the finest ever not to include a cymbal. Clearly a…

  • Sea Pinks – Rockpool Blue

Belfast’s foremost purveyors of jangle-pop, Sea Pinks, have announced their latest album, Rockpool Blue, out on September 28. The 28 minute album is their seventh LP since their 2010 inception. Recorded in four days over a six month period by engineer Ben McAuley at Start Together Studios, Belfast. Sonically blissed-out and dripping – moreso than any record before – it thematically tackles the pressure of adult responsibilities against the internal imposter syndrome that comes with it. Following bassist Steven Henry’s departure, frontman & guitarist Neil Brogan has taken on bass duties, with Davey Agnew on drums. Stream first track ‘Watermelon Sugar (Alcohol)’ below: Rockpool Blue…

  • A Litany Of Failures Vol. II Announced

Following the limited release of cross-Ireland Little L Records compilation, 2016’s A Litany of Failures – featuring Oh Boland, Shrug Life, That Snaake and Junk Drawer – an expanded second edition has been confirmed for release on July 13. Set to be released on 180g gatefold double vinyl, as well as through Bandcamp, Spotify and the usual outlets, it features 18 acts from Belfast, Cork, Derry, Donegal, Dublin, Galway & Limerick. The DIY, co-op endeavour aims to provide an opportunity to perform outside each of their hometowns, shortening the mental distances between bands, and encouraging a cross-pollination of musical communities. Splitting costs between artists and the organisers, a sense of…

Formerly the indie kings of Belfast, General Fiasco return for a one-off reunion show at Voodoo on Wednesday, January 31. The band, formed of Mid-Ulster natives Stephen Leacock and brothers Owen & Enda Strathern, gained notable popularity in the UK indie circuit in their stint together, before the trio’s last show together as General Fiasco took place in June 2013. Their early EPs & 2010 debut album Buildings, led to their featuring in the likes of The Inbetweeners, and in the years since their dissolution, they’ve performed together and apart in various guises, including with Oh Volcano and Franklyn. Tickets cost £10, and in the spirit of independent venue support, will only…

  • Fox Colony – Patterns

Belfast-based emo-tinged indie rock trio Fox Colony release their debut EP, Patterns on May 4. Associates & former bandmates of indie-pop outfit Brand New Friend, the young band recorded Patterns with Start Together Studios’ Rocky O’Reilly and have an uncanny ability to craft a tune without being afraid of wearing hearts – or accents – on their sleeves. The EP takes some cues from the current emo-pop revival of Modern Baseball, with the occasional glimmer of early ’90s alt. rock dischordance seeping in. Patterns will be available from Bandcamp – both digitally on CD – from May 4. Fox Colony launch Patterns at McHugh’s Basement on May 4, with…

  • Sea Pinks – Watercourse

Dreamy Belfast-based jangle-pop trio Sea Pinks release their new album, Watercourse on May 26 through Belfast-based indie label CF Records. Being their sixth album since their 2010 inception, the trio, fronted by singer/guitarist Neil Brogan – also of Cruising – started recording the album at Belfast’s Start Together Studios with Ben McAuley – producer for Documenta, Girls Names and more – in Summer 2016 with the intention of recording an EP, until they had recorded 16 songs, which ultimately were pared down to 10, for yet another concise Sea Pinks LP, some of which were mixed by Collin Dupuis, known for work on Angel Olsen‘s My Woman.…

  • Watch: Axis Of – Wetsuit

North coast erstwhile punk trio Axis Of have unveiled the video for ‘Wetsuit’ – the first single off their second album, The Mid Brae Inn – which sees them take off in a decidedly more indie, pop-rock direction, a huge departure from the band’s early brand of frantic hardcore; although, in saying that, they’ve been known to have an ear for a hook since the sludge-pop of ‘Lifehammer‘ from their debut LP, 2012’s Finding St. Kilda. The Mid Brae Inn gets its launch through Smalltown America on New Year’s Eve at Belfast’s Empire Music Hall, with ‘Wetsuit’ available from November 26 from Independent Music, with the b-side being…
